History

Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College was established in the year 1961 as a joint venture of Centre and Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. Named after Jawaharlal Nehru’s father, a renowned lawyer and freedom fighter, Motilal Nehru, the main building of college was inaugurated by Lal Bahadur Shastri, The former Prime Minister of India, on the 18th of April 1965. The college was deemed university status on the 26th of June 2002 and it is now known as the Motilal Nehru National Institute of technology. The institute initially started off offering Bachelor Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in 1961. Then in the year 1976-77 the institute came to offer Undergraduate program in Computer Science & Engineering and later in the year 1982-83 undergraduate programmes in Production and Industrial Engineering and Electronics Engineering were initiated. The year 1970-71 also saw the graduate programmes being introduced with the launch of the Master Degree courses in all the engineering departments. The institute has now on offered various M.Tech. Degree programs and M.C.A. course and it also register candidates for Ph.D. degree. The institute has also come up with two year / four semesters Post Graduate Degree in Management Studies valid from the year 1996. Undergraduate programmes in Chemical Engineering and BioTechnology has also been introduced in these recent years. And finally in the year 2007, 15th of August, the Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College was given the status of Institute of National Importance (INI).
 

​Campus

MNNIT is situated on the bank of the river Ganges, at a site spreading over 222 acres (0.9 km2).  MNNIT is a fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and one for girls, and one hostel exclusively for post graduate students. The other buildings on the campus includes the Computer Center, Central Library, CAD lab, Geo Lab, Concrete Lab, heat engine lab, electrical machines lab, virtual instrumentation lab, mechanical workshop, Multi purpose hall, conference and seminar hall.
The library subscribes to 68 Indian and 200 International technical periodicals and it also has an online access to journals as well. The institute is also among the few technical institutions in India to house a supercomputer, Param 10000. A 1 Gbit/s Local Area Network (LAN) integrates the entire college campus and the hostels and a 32 Mbit/s leased line from BSNL offers 24 x 7 internet connectivity.

Hostels

There are seven Boys hostel with a capacity of 1800(1044 single seated rooms and 252 triple seated rooms), and two Girls hostels (145 capacity) at present in the Institute. The room allotment is done in a way that students from different parts of the country can freely intermingle with each other showcasing national integration.

Hostel messes are run on ‘no profit no loss bases, which are managed by nominated representatives of students under the overall supervisions of wardens. The foreign students have their own separate mess named as international mess where non vegetarian food is also served.

To avoid ragging the newly admitted boy students are allotted separate hostels away from senior students. The hostel administration grants financial assistance to meet the mess bills to needy students. One new hostel is under construction to accommodate additional number of students.

Several new facilities are being provided in girl’s hostel like washing machines facilities, refrigerators, computers, internet connectivity, etc. One PCO booth is also attached in the girl’s hostel campus.

There is a team of a warden who is in charge of each of the hostel. They supervise the affairs concerning room allocation to the individual students and issuing the 'Concession Forms' for the students taking the Institute vacations. Also the warden has the responsibility of carrying forward to concerned authorities the students’ complaints regarding the room maintenance.
MNNIT has students from all parts of country. The institute is also coming up with a hostel for married M.Tech and PhD students which are still under construction.

Candidates from  many countries such as Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Mozambique, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNNIT for various undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

Cultural Activities

The MNNIT hosts four Major National Level Meets annually; 'Avishkar' is the National Level Technical Meet, is conducted annually a one of its kind in terms of scale and quality of events, 'Culrav' the Annual Cultural Festival showcasing the diverse cultural wealth of India, a celebration of the vibrant spirit of MNNIT, 'Gnosiomania' an Annual National Level Quiz Festival one of the first of its kind in the country, and finally the 'Robofest- The Rise of Machines"  a three day national level fest, fully dedicated  to the field of Robotics.
