Is Dropping a Year for IITs Good Exam Strategy?
In 2012, number of freshers appearing for IIT-JEE exam was much higher than the students who gave the exam a second try. Yet, as many as 61.9% students who cracked IIT JEE and were selected by the IITs were repeaters (appearing for the exam for the second time). These statistics are certainly a great booster for students who fail to crack JEE exam in their first attempt.
Many students ask us every year whether it be a good idea for them to drop a year and just focus on JEE preparation. The answer to this question may vary from individual to individual – depending on his or her particular condition.
How to decide whether you should drop a year or not?
Let us dig deep into different case studies and determine what can be the right answer in each case:
Case 1: Cracked JEE Advanced with low rank
Many students who crack JEE Advanced in their first attempt do not realize the risks they are taking by letting go of the seats they are offered. Typically, students think that by dropping a year they will be able to study harder for the next one year, get a better branch or a better ranking IIT.
To be able to take an informed decision, you should be aware of the consequences of your decision.
Risks you take by opting for a Second Attempt
- You may get bored, depressed or frustrated over the next year.
- There is a chance that it may turn out to be just a bad day for you – sickness, accident or just plain bad luck can ruin your day and your chance to get even your present rank.
- You will be under a lot of stress next year as it will be your last chance to crack the IIT JEE (Advanced) exam.
What you can achieve in your Second Attempt?
Desired IIT:  Computer Science Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering are the two most in-demand engineering branches at any engineering college. In fact, if you get admission in these branches in any IIT or even some of the top NITs, you stand a chance to do better than student of Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgy or Mining branches at better ranked IITs – placement and package wise.
It is a good idea to go for the best branch you can get in terms of your study and career goals than to get stuck on a particular college. Just make sure that college is good enough to have adequate resources for you.
- Desired Engineering Branch or Stream: Being IITians ourselves, this is one tip that we can give you. You do not have to lose a precious year to get an engineering branch of your choice. At all the IITs, if you perform well in the first year, you can change your department in the second year!
Don’t worry about the pay packages yet. The fact is that the best pay packages are offered by Tech and IT companies which largely absorb Computer Science students. Next in the line are Finance, Consulting and Investment companies that take in students of all branches who have excellent analytical skills and number crunching abilities.
So, irrespective of the branch you choose, you will always have a chance to try out for finance and investment jobs.
Please Note: Architecture is the only department where you can change your branch in the second year. So, keep that in mind when you opt for a seat in B. Arch course.
 Case 2: Cracked JEE Main with good rank but failed to crack JEE Advanced
After JEE Main, you stand a good chance to get admission in some of the top NITs and other good engineering colleges. You may also try to crack BITSAT and join BITS Pilani which enjoys good enough reputation.
Securing a seat in other engineering colleges is safer. It saves you a year and lays out a certain career path for you instead of an uncertain future.  Surveys indicate that students of many NITs have performed better than several IITians!
Not getting a branch you want? Like IITs, most of the engineering colleges allow you to change your department after first year – based on your academic performance. So, instead of sitting at home and preparing for JEE Main again, you can join the college and work hard in the first year to get good marks and change your department in the second year.
In short, ponder on your options well before you choose to let go of the seat you are offered. Attempt JEE for the second time, only if it is an absolute must.

I went through the article and it has certainly proved to be helpful to me. i wrote the jee main 2014 and made some extremely silly mistakes and that too in a very large number in chemistry. so even though i scored well in physics and mathematics, i believe my net total would not cross the cutoff. i have grown into depression. i was a fiitjee student. If you are so confidant about your decision with your love of engineering as well as for IIT, You should take a drop. But do join a good institute for the coaching which will provide you a studious environment and competitive attitude which will keep you going all through your drop year.

You should definitely join a coaching institute. Being totally self dependent can ultimately lead to frustration and loss of self confidence. A coaching institute will provide you the right environment to study. The regular tests will keep you updated about your strengths and weaknesses. The choice of institute is your own. If you were satisfied with the teachers in your previous institute and are comfortable with their way of teaching, go for the same. Otherwise, change the institute. But keep in mind that regular dropper’s batch classes take most of the day so the institute should not be too far from your residence as you need to invest more time in studies rather than in traveling.

Sir,in 11th i joined resonance in august for two year jee prep since i joined late so my 11 got ruined .but i managed to get 55-60% in my advanced test in 12th and expected it in advanced too but, my jee day got ruined and i got 130 only in advanced and182 in mains. Must i repeat????

Don’t be under pressure of anybody. Ask yourself. Do you want to drop? You can do well if you drop but only if you want to. Dropping a year requires more emotional and mental stability along with the focus on studies. You have to be strong and confident throughout the year and have a belief on yourself. You are a bright student. You can excel in whatever field you want but the choice is yours.

I am a 12th pass student with 93% marks inISC.
I have only102 for my jee mains.I had a fixed goal in the beginning.But I got distracted due to school activities.I know I can do way better.And I want to prove to myself that I am capable.But I don’t way to spent anymore money on coaching as I have already wasted a lot of my parents money already.My parents are planning on putting me in one of the colleges of my someplace kerala.I don’t know if i should join the college and repeat.because if i do i could get distracted again.But I’m not sure if I by not joining I would forfeit my chances even in getting admitted to an ordinary college .Please help me.
A lot of students every year do the same. You just need to be focused all through the year. Definitely, distractions will be there as you will be entering an entirely new life and culture, but, If you strictly adhere to your goal and work hard for it regularly, You can achieve it. You have the potential and should give it a chance. The advantage with you will be that even if something goes wrong, You will be saving a year with your college.

i got 175 in jee main 2014 and 94.4% in cbse boards. my AIR is 16242 and state rank for TN is 544. with this im expecting to get only bad nits.
my jee advanced 2014 score is 143 and rank is 12483 and i made a lot of silly mistakes in

as of now i ve got admission in a very good state college (and best in chennai after iit madras) through state counselling.

when i talk about 2nd attempt at jee advanced, my parents get so furious and they say that i could work hard for GATE and get into mtech!!

If you think you can do better next year then go for it, if you are getting your desired branch in good state engineering college then it would be a good choice and if you are not getting your desired branch then with the same branch NIT is a better choice,
Getting An IIT from gate is not a tough task for an above average student and as you are saying so i believe that you will definitely get an IIT for Mtech,
There is no meaning of preparing gate from now.

Sir I have done all the bullshits at the examination hour… I have been good at the fitjee and allen aits scoring more than 150 in every test… And Everyone had expected a score of 200 in the JEE Mains 2015 exam… That 3 hr ruined everything… My Score is 105 and may be by OBC cutoff I will qualify but this is least expected…I have done many a calculations and small mistakes.. And most importantly for the 1st time I was short of time,,, I wasnt even able to read 26 physics questions… When I attempt many a question now, I come up with absolutely correct answer… But I dont know What had have happd to me in that crucial 3 hrs…. These days Its been a lot of depressing to me n I fear It might ruin my advanced Exam too…. Shall I take a step and take 1 more year…
See, If your target is JEE Advanced, and you have not performed well in JEE Main but if you can make it clear (under 1.5 lakh) and suppose if you perform well in jee advanced, then will you regret about JEE Main performance?

i took the jee mains 2015 and i was a regular vmc school correspondent student , i was good in my practice tests , in 11th and 12th mid but due to the poor coordination of the school and the portal system , so i had to take up tuitions for boards and due to their influence ( i dont know it was the right decision or not ) they made me focus on boards from september onwards which messed up my iit preparation and i couldnt even qualify , along with my whole class only 3 – 4 students must have. I am thinking of taking a drop because i know i can study alot and when i have the time too i can utilise it , I do not want to spend my whole life being a student of manipal , or vit . it may be tough for my parents but i think i can manage them to agree with me , I want to know if taking a drop is a viable opt

Greetings.I joined a coaching institute in class 12 in august(i.e. very late) and i only scored 98 marks in jee mains 2015 and expecting 85-90% in boards(cbse).I think i have much more potential but I easily get distracted I had also appeared for vit,srm and got 25,163 and 7937 respectively and would not be able to secure place in my desired branch(CS,EEE) and right now I am very much confused if to take one year drop(plz suggest me coaching centre) or else take admission in vit,or srm and then either try to change my brach to desired branch in next year by getting good CGPA and side by side prepare for jee.plz help me with it.

Taking a decision of one year drop becomes hard when you have cleared JEE Advanced with low rank or JEE Main with good rank, you are not in these two situation, VIT is good, but i personally believe that you have potential to crack and you should give it a chance, and don’t go for self study,start with a full year coaching program with test series 🙂

To askIITians team… would it be a wise judgement to go for Engineering and meanwhile preparing for BITSAT not JEE (taking your point of Potential under deep consideration).. Although The Preparation is mostly similar but I am more Comfortable and I think more able to clear BITSAT rather than JEE-mains then Advanced due to the reason you mentioned (& I do believe that Proper coaching is necessary for JEE’s preparation). So Online Preparation for BITSAT is what I am thinking about while carrying out Engineering and Managing both worlds (also that too needs great strength and discipline)… My Criteria for what I have told is that I think All we Aspirants are giving these exams to get Best Resource for our Aims or our future things to deal with through College…. And good colleges are for sure a Milestone in that Journey and Time should be wisely spent! What would you suggest?

I appeared for the JEE mains 2015 and scored 72 and my 12th CBSE board score was 81%. I had a deep thought over it whether i can be an IITian or NITian. The answer i got from myself was a “YES”. But I can’t find a better way to prepare for the exam so that I can pursue. Sir, I am so confused today I had given the Jee mains exam .my experience about exam says that paper level is around class 12&11&10 but I am not expecting to crack Jee mains this year & I was not part of any coaching for Jee mains &advance , I am expecting above 80%marks in class 12 in CBSE board . is it good for me to drop a year and join a coaching to crack mains and advance both ? Is it possible ?

hello i scored a rank of 4426 this year and i am not getting any good branch my jee main score is also not that good what should i do? is it better to go in a lower ranked NIT with CS branch or should i opt for taking a drop for better branch options

I personally feel taking a drop for IIT can prove to be a good decision because my elder sister decided to take drop for a year and prepare well for the exam. Her first attempt was a great learning experience to her. She came to know many point where improvements were needs and with her efforts as well as catalyser her coaching institutes confidence on her, she was able to clear IIT with a good AIR rank and is studying in IIT Bombay now.

I took coaching for two years and failed to crack JEE MAIN in the first attempt, but I am definitely sure of pursuing a career in Engineering.
So my question is what next?
1- Drop and coaching
2- Drop and self study (In Kota or home)
3- Not to drop and go through CET or private

I got 515 in Karnataka CET. With this rank, I will get CS or ECE in top colleges of Karnataka like RVCE or BMS. I qualified JEE Mains 2018 ( 56k rank and 101 marks). I didn’t qualify JEE Advanced.
I am ready to take a drop. But, Is IIT REALLY worth it ?

hello sir , i appeared for jee main 2018 and i scored 37.I think the main reason for this was lack of good teachers at coaching institute and lack of hardwork.I scored 71 percent in my HSC exam and i do actually clear the top 20 percentile cutoff list for jee advanced but i cant clear the percentile cutoff list for jee mains! Should i give it a try ?
