New Delhi: As many as 65 of the Top 100 rank holders in JEE Advanced 2015 have chosen as IIT Bombay as their most preferred IIT. Last year too, IIT-B at Powai was right at the top of list of most preferred IITs by the top 100 rank holders in the IIT entrance exam. However, only 58 from Top 100 in JEE Adanced 2014 had chosen IIT-B – making it the first time when the Powai institute had managed to get less than 60 rank holders in its kitty.
The second on the list of IITs was IIT Delhi, which managed only 30 of the Top 100 rankers this year – sliding down from 36 last year. Hence, between IIT-B and IIT-D, 95 of the Top 100 rank holders in JEE Advanced 2015 exam were already booked. 3 of the Top 100 chose IIT Madras as their study destination while 2 chose IIT Kanpur to be the institute of their choice.
Since 34 students in Top 100 JEE Advanced rankers were from IIT Bombay zone, Mumbai institute seemed like an obvious choice for them. But what was surprising is that even though 28 of the Top 100 rank holders were from IIT Madras zone, as many as 25 chose to join IIT-B.
IIT-B Director Devan Khakhar said, “Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electrical Engineering (EE) are the two most popular choices for students in top ranks. IIT-B excels in both these fields. Hence, majority of the toppers prefer to join it. Moreover, IIT Bombay has carved a niche as the best IIT – a reputation which gets re-enforced every year with more toppers opting for the institute.â€Â
This year, opening rank for CSE at IIT-B was #1 while the closing rank was #59 – indicating that most of the toppers in Top 60 chose to join the programme. At IIT Delhi, opening rank for CSE was #31 while the closing rank was #102. Opening rank for CSE at IIT Kanpur was #26 while for IIT Madras, it was #61.
Opening rank for EE at IIT-B was #9 and the closing rank was #240.
