Hawk’s Eye View of IIT JEE Past Year Papers

An engineering aspirant, especially those who want to join the IITs, must have a good grip on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

A look at the performance of candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced 2013 revealed that many candidates also faced problem in managing time properly and left many Maths problems unsolved, even though Maths section was comparatively easy last year. This emphasizes some core issues in JEE preparation – time management and building up speed.

And how do we do that? The answer is simple enough. Solve as many IIT JEE previous year question papers as you can, especially during the last three or four months of your preparation.

Remember:

• JEE Main paper has a total of 90 questions (30 each for Physics, Chemistry and Math) that are to be solved in three hours or 180 minutes. It means students roughly have 1 to 2 minutes to solve a question. When you solve past year AIEEE or JEE Main papers, you should focus on fundamental concepts in a question as well as answering the question within this time period.
•  JEE Advanced paper has a total of 60 questions (20 each for Physics, Chemistry and Math) that are to be solved in three hours or 180 minutes. It means students will have 2 to 3 minutes to solve each question. When you solve IIT JEE or JEE Advanced previous year question papers, you should remember to stay within this time-limit.

•  Use previous years papers to understand what to expect in your JEE exam and the examination pattern. As you solve the papers, you will be able to gauge the difficulty level and type of questions asked in the exam.
•  Pay attention to the marks distribution across different topics and synchronize your exam taking strategy with the scoring pattern of the exam.
•  All topics are important and analysis of JEE trends show that questions are asked equitably from Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus. Hence, do not rely on ‘important topics’ for your preparation.
• Start from easier questions and attempt difficult questions only when you have time.
• Take each test during the specified examination hours and consider it your final test. This will train your mind to work at its best during those hours.
• Do not forget to read all the instructions carefully before solving IIT JEE question paper.
