New Delhi: Third student has been found dead at IIT Guwahati in the last one year. The body of Ujjwal Shailabh was found near the four-storey Brahmaputra Hostel around 11:30 am by some students. IIT Ujjawal was 24 years old and was from Triveniganj town in the Supoul district of Bihar.
The body was found face down in a pool of blood. IIT authorities reported the matter to the police who suspects suicide after the preliminary investigation.
Ujjwal was pursuing B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing and was in his final semester. His fellow students said that he was depressed for some time due to his poor academic performance in recent days.
No suicide note has been found near him or in his hostel room. He used to stay at the ground floor but it seems that he climbed to the roof and jumped down to his death.
In September 2014, Tushad Yadav – who was in first semester of Electronics & Communication – was found dead while in March 2015, Shoaib Ahmed – a second-semester student of M.Sc was found hanging in his hostel room.
Ujjwal took admission at IIT Guwahati in 2009. IIT Guwahati was set up in 1995 and since then, 6-7 students have been suspected of committing suicide at the institute.
There are four psychologists at the institute to counsel students too but apparently, they have not seem to make much difference in students’ psyche at the institute. There are more than 5,500 students in the institute enrolled here right now and for their safety, it is high time to take some concrete steps in this direction.
