Memoirs of IITians about their First day at IIT
Which IITian can ever forget their first day at IIT? The knots in the stomach about how tough their studies will get, worry about what will the batch mates be like, nightmares about scary professors and seniors and some dreams about ‘beautiful’ girls in class are part of the anxieties all IITians have before entering their class. We went through diaries of several IITians and picked up gems about their first day at IIT:
Mayank Jain’s dream-shattering experience
Though there were only 50 girls out of our batch of 500 students, I was daydreaming about hooking up a beautiful girl in college. Our seniors had strictly instructed us against using the ‘lift’ and to take up stairs instead but I broke the rule to follow a ‘cute’ glam girl into the lift to go to my class on fourth floor. My heart skipped a beat when the girl entered ‘my’ class. With adrenalin pumped up and my hopes at all-time high, I entered the class only to find out that the girl is our ‘teacher’. Later, we found out that she is doing her PhD at IIT-D and is a teaching assistant too.
Sonu Kumar got jolted to the reality
I went 15 minutes early to the class – all drummed about learning from the best professors of India. A Professor came, did not even look at his class, plugged his pen drive to the computer and started reading them in a monotonous tone. I wondered where I had landed up! I looked around in the class – only to find my classmates struggling to copy slides as soon as possible. Then, the story kept playing itself with different professors. It is not surprising that our dream of becoming best engineers slowly slid down to surviving the semester and passing the course somehow.
Utkarsh Gupta dropped back to Earth
Days before joining college, I was extremely happy about my experience. Everyone around me admired me and praised me. My heart swelled with pride when I entered the gates of the IIT for the first time. Then, I spent the entire day at the registration desk completing formalities, arranging and submitting the documents, get a hostel and settle down there. On the first day of our classes, professors never cared about our achievements. They asked our names and the cities we came from in the introductory sessions and left us all floating down to Earth in our own time.
