An IIT student, Naveen Kumar Jha ostensibly went missing from the Kanpur campus. The second year student of M.tech was found to be missing since Monday by the authorities at IIT. He failed to get through a group discussion which was a part of the placement process. On returning he informed that he had gone to Haridwar seeking peace and tranquility as he was frustrated and thwarted by his incompetence to qualify in the placement process.
As reported by A K Ghosh, Dean of Students Welfare, the management does not plan to punish him on account of his misbehavior; instead efforts are being made by the counselors to guide and advise him.
Ghosh informed that it was the placement season and various companies had come for hiring students. Naveen was unsuccessful in clearing the group discussion of one concern and so was disheartened. He was not talking to anyone, not even his friends. The hostel warden found the door of Naveen’s room open during his daily round at night. His cell, ATM card and laptop were scattered on his bed. Seeing this, the warden assumed that he might have gone out. But when he did not return till morning it became an issue of concern and the authorities lodged a missing person’s complaint.  His brother was also informed about the matter.
As quoted by Ghosh, “We were hopeful that he will come back soon as the placement process is not yet over and he is expected to get a good offerâ€Â. The police officials had already started looking into the matter and the search for Naveen had already begun. Since he was depressed, the chances of his committing suicide were also being explored.
