New Delhi: Anand Kumar, the founder of Super 30, is a celebrity in his own right. An eminent mathematician, Anand was born in Patna, Bihar to a post office clerk who could not afford private schooling for his children. He secured admission in Cambridge University but could not afford to go there. In 1992, he started the Ramanujan School of Mathematics (RSM).
Since 2002, RSM holds a competitive test to select 30 students for the Super 30 programme in which intelligent and poor students are tutored for free. These students are provided free study material, food and lodging facilities too. Super 30 program receives no support from the government or other agencies. From 2003 – 2013, 281 out of 330 Super 30 students made it to the IITs. From 2008 to 2010, all the 30 students from Super 30 nailed the exam.
Of course, this achievement story of Super 30 and his founder Anand Kumar deserves to be told as many times as possible, in as many forms as possible. Anurag Basu has chosen to weave the script on his new movie around it. The movie is sure to create waves in all those students who are preparing for IIT JEE.
Earlier, ‘3 Idiots’ had been made on a Chetan Bhagatstory inspired by the life at IITs. It was a blockbuster. Another movie – Aarakshan – in which Amitabh Bachchan’s character was inspired by Anand Kumar, also did quite well.
