NIT Durgapur: Why to Join It and Why to Avoid It?
NIT Durgapur ranks amongst the top five NITs of India. The college was set up in 1960 and has already celebrated 50 years of existence. It is consistently ranked among the top engineering colleges of India. National Institute of Technology, Durgapur or NITD was the first among the regional engineering colleges in India and has carved its niche as an Institute of National Importance.
Most popular branch in NIT Durgapur is Computer Science & Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. JEE main 2013 cutoff rank for IIT-D for CSE and ME was 12839 and 15792, respectively.
NIT Durgapur is one of the few engineering colleges to have nearly 100% placements. On an average, a CSE and a ME student got a job offer of Rs 3-7 lakhs per annum. The graph below gives the placement status for 2013.
The top recruiters for 2013 were TCS, IBM, CapGemini and L&T ECC. Other companies that employ NIT-D alumni are Microsoft, Smasung (Sell), MuSigma, Polaris FT, Samsung R & D, JSL, Ericsson, Uttam Galva Steel, to name a few
NIT Durgapur is accredited by the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) and the British Council allowing a large number of B. Tech pass-outs from here to pursue graduate studies in the US and the UK.
There are about 100 faculty members at NIT Durgapur. The faculty-student ratio is quite commendable though the boy to girl ratio is quite dismal. The faculty is experienced and well qualified. All of them are well-versed in their subjects and have a friendly disposition towards their students.
Almost all the departments at NIT Durgapur are engaged in research activities – including CSE, ECE, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The total number of papers published/accepted for publication increased from 82 in 2006-07 to 308 in 2008-09, out of which 156 papers were published in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborations with CERN, Geneva and Durgapur Steel Plant are just some of its prestigious projects.
NITD has a total of nine, new and old hostels for boys and girls. Since it is a fully residential institute, taking up hostel facilities is compulsory for all the students. Surprisingly both new and old hostels are sought by students. Every hostel has its own mess and lounge areas which make them a hit with the students. They are equipped with high Internet speed and Wi-Fi facility throughout the campus.
Students find ample of time to engage in various activities and clubs for extracurricular hobbies. Intra Hall Tournaments and intra NIT sports tournaments are the most popular. The cultural fest is an annual event for music lovers as stars from the industry come together was ‘Recstacy’â€Â. Another festival ‘Cinefest’ is a three day program where movies of different genres are shown. ‘Aarohan’ is the annual techno management fest.
