The Undisputedâ€â€To Find the Real Truth behind IITs and BITS Disputed Dominance
The quintessential history of IITs in India can be traced back to India’s revolutionary pre-independence era when, for the first time, Sir Ardeshir proposed the concept of IITs right after the second world-war. Owing to Sir Adheshir’s vision of India’s massive future dependence on technology, first major IIT was founded in Kharagpur     in 1951 and Sir J.C. Ghosh (the then Director of Indian Institute of Science) who, along with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, played a vital role in introducing IITs in India became its first director.
And ever since, IITs have become the foundation of India’s endless growth and have also contributed immensely to its modern image. However with the introduction of BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) in 1964, the limelight that only IITs had hogged so far was divided abruptly, owing to BITS Pilani’s overwhelming reception amongst a large group of students.
Although both, IITs and BITS-Pilani, have walked parallel to establish India’s unparalleled technological image in the world, the comparisons were inevitably drawn with or without logics by a large Indian group. These on and off comparisons have now become a national debate, which, many groups believe, has no concrete conclusion in the near future.
One’s superiority over another is illusive and hard to predict by mere unresponsive facts. Hence to help you find the better of the two, we’ve looked at the comparison between IITs and BITS Pilani the other way. Unlike existing comparisons, which are mostly biased or unreal, we have tried to view these comparisons from the perspectives of students from IITs and BITS-Pilani.
Let’s take you through this detailed study carried out by us.
Companies Founded by IITians and BITS Pilani’s Students
To really understand how important or effective a strong entrepreneurial culture can be for any campus, we should rather take an example of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT.
The total revenue of the companies founded by MIT graduates is on the verge of surpassing the mark of whopping $2 trillion, which is far more than India’s current GDP.
That explains how the number of graduates from IITs and BITS-Pilani, those who have founded companies, can be taken as an ideal yardstick to figure out the better between the two.
According to official reports, BITS Pilani has been experiencing a constant growth in the number of companies founded by its students.
GharPay, Zivame & Exotel, and redBus have their founders tracing their roots back at BITS Pilani. On the other hand, Scripbox, Online Prasad, Grey Orange Robotics, Forus Health, BigBasket, and Attune have their co-founders from BITS Pilani.
Not only strong entrepreneurial, but also BITS’ modern take on education, all around development, and innovate exposure makes BITS Pilani stand out from the rest.
Companies | Founders | Engineering Institute |
redBus | Phanindra Sama, Sudhakar Pasupunuri, Charan Padmaraju | BITS-Pilani |
Akmai Technology | Preetish Nijhawan | BITS-Pilani |
Hotmail | Sabir Bhatia | BITS-Pilani |
Webify | Manojr Saxena | BITS-Pilani |
Onida | Gullu Mirchandani | BITS-Pilani |
Value First | Gagan Chaddha | BITS Pilani |
Rajesh | i-Flex Solutions | BITS Pilani |
Now to talk about IITs, the institution has also produced founders of many prestigious start-ups in India and abroad. Let’s go through the table given below to know the founders of such start-ups from IITs.
Companies | Founders | Engineering Institutes |
Infosys | N.R. Narayana Murthy | IIT-Kanpur |
Snapdeal | Rohit Bansal | IIT-Delhi |
Bluepage | Ayush Vashney, Sahil Baghla | IIT-Kanpur |
Transweb | Aditya Singhal, Nishant Sinha | IIT-Delhi |
Flipkart | Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal | IIT-Delhi |
Travel Triangle | Sankalp Agarwal, Sanchit Garg, Prabhat Gupta | IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Guwahati |
Total Number of Students Graduating from IITs and BITS-Pilani
Total number of students who graduated last year from IITs was 6491 while those who passed out from BITs Pilani were approximately 2000 students. Understandably, it’s a huge difference between the two. This means that the campus with the highest number of students passing out every year is producing more number of successful engineers than the other. More number of engineers means more number of successful entrepreneurs and a great economic boost for the country.
Notable Positions in the Corporate World Held by BITSians and IITians
Although both IITs and BITS-Pilani have had a parallel walk to India’s growth, there is a huge difference between IITians and BITSians holding prestigious positions in the corporate world.
Soumitra Dutta from IIT-Delhi is the Dean of Cornell University’s Management School. Dipchand “Deep†Nishar is the most paid manager currently working at LinkedIn. On the other hand, there’s Vinod Khosla from IIT-Delhi again, one of the most influential personalities in Silicon Valley, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems. We can’t forget Nikesh Arora, a graduate from IIT-Varanasi, who is the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer of Google. He is one of the most paid employees working with Google.
Baba Kalyani (the chairman of Bharat Forge), Sanjay Mehrotra (President and co-founder of SanDisk), Prithviraj Chavan (Chief Minister of Maharashtra), Gullu L. Chandani (Founder and CEO of Onida Electronics), Sunil Duggal (CEO of Dabur), and Rakesh Kapoor (CEO of Reckitt Benckiser) etc. are some of the most notable Alumni from BITS Pilani.
Apparently, number of notable positions held by IITians and BITSians, again, entirely depends on the number of students graduating every year. Obviously, more number of students passing out every year from any institute will have more chances of securing more notable positions in the corporate world.
Average Pay Package offered to IITians and BITSians
A lot of factors are taken into account by companies when determining average pay packages for both IITians and BITSians. So to talk about a particular average pay package here, we will actually end up doing a lengthy, complicated discussion without any concrete conclusion. We must rather tread on to a safe and, of course, a less complicated path. Let’s review average pay packages based on last 5 years’ packages offered to students of B.Tech at top IITs and BITS Pilani campuses.
The average pay package offered to any IITian (B.Tech) is anywhere between Rs 43750 and 48,000 monthly.
The average pay package offered to any BITSian (B.Tech) is anywhere between Rs 39500 and 43,000 monthly.
However, you must not forget that there is a lot of variance among these packages due to various factors. Salaries go up and down as per the ability of candidates and their academic performances.
Average pay packages vary for candidates receiving job offers from abroad. As per official records, finance companies offer best packages to their employees. Goldman Sachs, Tower Research Capital, and World Quant etc have offered 20 lpa to IITians.
Highest Pay Packages Offered to IITians and BITSians
The world’s attention turns to IITs and BITS-Pilani suddenly every year with the news of fat pay packages offered to their students. But if we talk about who beats another when it comes to bagging the highest pay packages, then there’s a lot of disparity to witness here.
There are 12 IITians from IIT-Kanpur who have very recently bagged a fat pay package of Rs. 1 crore each while there are these two incredible BITSians who have bagged the highest pay packages ever in India till date with Rs. 1.44 crore.
But again, as in case of average pay packages offered to IITians and BITSians, highest pay packages too depend entirely on candidates’ abilities, academic performances, and other important factors.
Academic and Extra-Academic Environment
Despite being among the proudest technology institutes of India, educational and college environment of the two differ drastically. And if this is the only factor one has to consider, then, obviously, BITS Pilani will score more points than IITs.
In fact, the popularity of BITS-Pilani among its engineering aspirants is highly driven by its educational and college environment. The ambience of BITS Pilani’s campus is both inspiring and vibrating with perfectly planned and aligned layout for the whole campus, libraries, and hostels.
IITs cannot beat the BITS Pilani’s unique concept of taking tutorials from the teacher of students’ choice. BITS’ cultural events such as Grubs are mind blowing. They don’t only help you delve into your Indian roots, but also help you find the real you.
According to a survey, many students believe that BITS Pilani adapts faster to changes in educational sector than IITs. For example, Engineer Graphics in BITS is still called Engineer Drawing in IITs. BITS uses AutoCad for Engineering Graphics while IITs still go the traditional way.
Fee Structures
All right! As IITs are run by the government of India, their fee structures are inevitably lower than that of BITS Pilani’s campuses. Let’s take a look at the fee structure of top IITs across India in general category.
The total fees payable at the time of admission at IIT-Bombay is Rs 67,876 while the total fees payable at the time of admission at IIT-Delhi is Rs 56,635. The total fees payable at the time of admission by students at IIT-Kanpur is Rs 66,517 while it’s Rs 57,876 at IIT-Kharagpur.
IIT-Roorkee charges Rs 63,820 while IIT-Madras charges Rs 54,927.
BITS Pilani is very expensive as even its integrated first degrees program cost over lakhs.
Infrastructure
To meet all contemporary educational demands and needs of students, both IITs and BITS Pilani’s campuses are equipped with quality infrastructures complementing their reputations.
However, as BITS Pilani seems to have made it a point to adapt to changes in technology faster than IITs, BITS is equipped with better infrastructures than IITs.
IIM Conversion
Although about 4-5% IITians prepare for CAT just after graduation, this percentage increases from 40% to 60 % once candidates earn quality work experience. And about 60 % students receive degrees in MBA. Most IITians also prepare for Civil services.
On the other hand, 50% to 70% students receive degrees in MBA while 10-20% students opt for research in India or abroad. However, students from BITS Pilani opt less for Civil Services as compared to IITians.
Faculty
BITS Pilani has carved a special niche for itself with its international infrastructure and excellent faculty. And on the other hand, IITs are facing an all-time shortage of faculty as standing committee on Human Resource Development reports. As a matter of fact, the condition of new IITs is even worse.
IIT-Hyderabad has a requirement of 85 faculty members while, as standing committee reports, it currently has 74 faculty members. IIT-Bhubaneswar has total 50 faculty members against its requirement of 62 members.
Owing to this serious concern, most IITs have already started aggressive communication campaigns across the country to reach out to post docs and graduate students of top universities worldwide. IITs are also organizing meetings in various universities around the world.
With the aforementioned discussion, you can now draw your own standard comparisons between IITs and BITS to choose the one institution you find the best. To simply rely on studies before taking admission is an outdated practice; modern generation now needs an unbiased platform from where it can view facts and take decision accordingly.
The discussion above is one such endeavor by us to help you gain better understanding of existing environment in IITs and BITS-Pilani.

BITS was established in 1929. It became a deemed university in 1964.
Thanks for providing us with the information. We will update the blog with the same.

Gurdeep Singh Pall-Vice president of Skype India has studied from BITS-Pilani.
Thanks Vishal for your input and support.
Actually, writing about each and everyone from BITS was not possible. and in fact, we already have an entire blog post written particularly about Gurdeep Singh.
Best Regards
Aditya
Aditya It was Vishal commenting about Gurdeep not gurdeep commenting 😛
This article just can suffice in bringing out the contributions of these two institutions.
These two institutions can not be compared because of the fundamental differences in their setup and how they work.
The difference starts right from their location one bieng at Pilani with virtually everything just centered around BITS whereas the IITs are located in a different setup. The lack of any other thing to do around campus increases the on-campus activities on campus as well as our bonding with each other:)
and why do we not leave out the cost factor for some time!> You cannot just pay the fees unless you clear JEE/BITSAT 😛
Join any of these institutions and you would come out highly changed in the positive direction.
@Vaishal
Then I can say Commodore in Directorate of Naval Design (Ministry of Defence) is passout from IIT Kharagpur,
Vice Presidents in Mazagon docks and Garden Rach Shipyard are from IIT Kgp.
Fair comparison but when matter comes to faculty satisfaction and campus life bits pilani need to improve much. Overnight changes in policies makes difficult to co-pup. To improve both faculty satisfaction and campus life lots of paper and PPT assignments have been done but no results………
For overall development BITS pilani is much better place…..than any other institute in india. Open book exams and practical approach makes it incredible. (in my previous comment please read cope up or cope with, instead of co-pup)
For overall development IITs are not better they are the best …than any other institution in India. Open books exams and “practical” approach is also followed in IITs.
BITS is perhaps one of the only institutes in India, which has quarters for retired faculty members just outside the campus because even after retirement many faculty members don’t want to leave the campus. And this is Pilani campus we are talking about.
Also, in terms of campus life, BITS has the most happening one amongst all colleges too. Imagine being tucked away in a far off village in the middle of a desert (even today the place isn’t physically connected to the world easily), what would you do? You’d find out ways to keep yourself busy. Very busy. And when attendance is not an issue, what would you do? You’d explore life and have as much fun as you can. That’s the campus life of BITS Pilani; not spent in malls or in the city, but seeing stars in the night and talking about existentialism, forming bonds that evoke nostalgia amongst it’s alumni even decades later. There were before me, there are those after me, but BITS will never be out of our hearts.
Compare that! 😛
Despite I am a student of IIT Guwahati, I personally think that the “average” quality of students in IIT is worse than in BITS Pilani.
~51% student in IITs are admitted because of their category (non-general).
Students not even scoring a Rank in JEE get admission in CSE depts if they have a SC/ST certificate in hand.
On the other hand, to get an admission in BITS, u have to score a minimum of ~300 which I think is really good and decent score!
Well if the % of seats reserved are reduced to 25-30% then no doubt that an average IITian is better than an average BITSian.
You are right , but you see by these reservation iits are trying to be more socially just as it is a central govt institute .
51% ??
Isnt that shocking??
Well its gud for me atleast.. The average marks in exams are pulled down by those people and it benefits us as IITs have a relative grading scheme.!
IIT kharagpur does have computer aided design and uses advanced solid works software
Moreover the no of startups by iitians is very high …
Though the number of BITSians opting for civil services is less than the IITs, the % of success is the highest for BITS Pilani vs any university in India. Here are the numbers: You might want to mention this. 🙂
60th report – No 1, 39.1% success – http://www.upsc.gov.in/general/rti/60AnnualReport/eng.pdf
61st report – No 1, 36.4% success – http://www.upsc.gov.in/general/rti/61annual_report/61Annual%20Report%202010-11%20Eng.pdf
62nd report – No 3, 22.5% success – http://www.upsc.gov.in/general/rti/62annualreport/62eng.pdf
We are highly grateful for you input and support Jatin.
We will definitely update our article with the same.

If they total no of students passing out is less, obviously the % comes out to be more.
what about suicide cases? almost after every three or four months we hear a suicide case in iit. isn’t that to be included?parents are sending their children to get educated not to die ……
there is no reservation in bits its completely on the basis of merit.
which produces far better quality sutdents. i am talking in terms of PERCENTAGE of good students which is very high than iits
fully supported
you may be right. But you have to accept that IITs are following social responsibilities in sharing knowledge to the people who face caste based discrimination in India. Can BITs do that? No, because it runs only for profits unlike Government Institutions like IITs and NITs. Be proud that despite being Government organisations, these institutions are benefiting all sectors of people.
i acknowledge the fact that iit’s are helping but even BITS is helping socially backward people through various NGO’s like Nirmaan . please get your facts clear before you speak.
yeah 🙂 thank you vai 🙂
giving evidence doesn’t make BITS proud. Does any BITS guy joined Defence forces ? I know, you cant give any answer for that. haha !
Yes, people from BITS do join the armed forces. Please get your facts straight before stating them!
tera baap tha iitian jo in kiya defence!! bc konsai iitian join karte hai defence
Major Bhanuchander Gupta is a pharmacy graduate (batch of 98’) and a gold medalist from BITS Pilani.
After his graduation, Bhanu joined the Indian armed forces and began his career as a lieutenant in 2003. He was promoted as captain after three years and to the rank of a Major two months ago in recognition of his contribution in the anti-terrorist operations in Kashmir and North Eastern states. He was also a member of the World Army Peace Committee.
Unfortunately, he died in an army helicopter crash at Nashik in February, 2011.

bitsians always do good where one can easily get through mugging up, they got no brain, thats why they go for civil services….now you might also want to compare IITs vs bits in CAT exam (where one requires brain to clear) … you will not be happy to know that bitsians fare badly here….IITians success ration is around 70%…you bitsians will always compare themselves with iitians i know…but you know during my 4 years at IIT, I never heard bits even once….no iitian care about bits….and one last thing….bits is full of only those guys who could not made it to an IIT…..
Most of the IITians do not even know about BITs….I know about it I met one of the guy from BITs and he started criticising IITs……I asked him did you clear IIT-JEE, he said no…then i asked him to shut his mouth and criticising those who defeated him for getting there…..he went to BITs only because he could not clear JEE, this is the case with every BITsian
Say you never heard about BITS? Not even when the two students from Pilani campus got a 1.44 crore package last year? Not when again 2 more students from the Pilani campus and even 1 student from Goa campus again got 1.44 crore this year? Speak some sense dude, being in an IIT is not a big deal. And certainly if being in IIT does this to you as you are, then people will be far better in BITS.
My self future iitian ,dude IIT is IIT…nice joke man,how many people in India hardly heard abt bits.bits is for those who can’t get into IIT… IIT Is always best…. I think you have forgot what bill gates had said ….computer industry has benefited greatly from we
iitians and you would know the us presidential candidate gen Wesley Clark wants to offer iitians automatic citizenship…BITS bekar hai .IIT IS BEST EVER
Tu reservation category me this gaya tha na..
but u also accept the truth that iitians are not ready to accept changes in education system and technology either.shit iits
Bits paper !!!!!!! Oh man I f**k it….questions are primary level Ques.getting IIT proves your intelligence ..and this year IIT gwahati boy is offered 5 crore pkg in placement that is more than 3 times of bits placement
I agree with many points but strongly disagree if u talk abt Faculty
IIT has shortage of faculty but the existing faculty r far more qualified than BITS
As quality of Research is mostly decided by quality of Phd and Master students so BITS is far below many IITs in this respect as it is nt able to attract good ranker of GATE(i know there is separate PG entrance for BITS but guys go for that only if they didn’t manage to get even into NITs bcz MHRD scholarship is not given)
but i don’t doubt BITS UG capability as a entrepreneur machine
if u want to go for Research than BITS is not the type of Institution to hit for
totally agree !!!
I have all the right to speak about both bits and it’s bitch. Cleared jee in Gen 3k. Graduated from bits. Only I piece of advise for u. Shut your mouth and get a job.
most of the IITians do not know BITS?? IITians are very low on GK it seems 😛
hahaha may be….or bits is not such a big name because we know Harvard, stanford, caltech.. 😛
Dude cool down. I am a bitsian, to be particular Pilani campus Cs. Got a little less than a 1k in jeea. So I guess there are many there who have enough intelligence and no not many almost all of them have quite a good iq. And i know iits have still higher preference than bits. And you are wrong those who had a screwed up day on jeea day go to bits not those who can’t make it to an IIT.
one cant get into iit only due to reservation system.did you ever ask reason from those two guys for not getting into iits. you will shut your mouth after listening the answer “” reservation.””
haha another frustrated person who blames reservation for his failure…i got open through open seat and never thought reservation as a problem…i personally feel the quality must hv improved in bits after exam based selection…earlier it was thorugh 12th rank and the college was full of as we call ‘ghotu’ people w/o any imagination…
U r living in dreams
Boy.. I think you needed to understand one thing here… I myself am from Bits-Pilani. But I dont give a f*** about where I am from.. Same is the case with so many bitsians who pass out every year. Because we have more important things to do … I think this is also the case with so many successful people who passout from IITs every year. Now, comes the category of people like u, who just spend the rest of their life doing nothing except feeling proud about getting an iit tag and boasting abt it day and night.. The only good thing that has happened to u is getting a seat in some IIT which according to u is the only difficult thing a person can face in life and u are one among those who has emerged victorious.Ok fine why to spoil ur happiness..keep enjoying the same way. Btw i run a company now.. What abt you ..? U don’t have to answer me..just ask this to urself … Take care my dear. Bye..
Though the IITs admit more than 50% of its students through reservation, it still has higher pay packages than the so called merit students of Bits-Pilani.
Wait for a few years. Or get your stats corrected.
Instead of disputing which institute is better, I believe a collaboration between the institutes, in terms of projects, idea exchange and so on will be beneficial to students of IITs as well as BITS and in turn, help in advancing the country.
A Beautiful Mind.
Respect Sir..
well said!!
not at all helpful for one who wants to be in the best
It is indeed rare to find articles of this sort, that present the facts with very little bias. Thanks for taking the effort to present the facts & helping students make wise decisions for their lives, rather than just going by what public perception is.
I think the number of graduates is a big factor that hasn’t been accommodated. For most of the last 80 odd years, BITS Pilani has had only 1 campus & that is Pilani. On the other hand there have been multiple IITs. This difference will obviously magnify year or year. So for example, when you say there are more IITian CEOs or engineers, you are actually comparing the combined might of 5+ IITs vs 1 BITS Pilani. I think a more comprehensive study should compare these numbers in CEO/student or something of that sort. Since that might not be possible, I guess, the info could be better presented that the difference is obviously due to a difference in number of graduates.
One last angle that could perhaps be covered is the present student intake (and possible brand dilution). Though brand dilution is affecting both (new campus launches) I think the IITian brand is diluting more than ever (many new IITs, majority seats through reservation & subsequent quality drop, etc). I believe that is a factor that atleast I would consider if I were to relive my choices.
For your kind information, there are two more campuses (Goa and Hyderabad) under Bits Pilani.
That’s why I said “For MOST OF THE LAST 80 ODD YEARS, BITS Pilani has had only 1 campus & that is Pilani.” BITS Goa was set up in 2004, Hyderabad in 2008 while Pilani was set up in 1929. Please read well before commenting.
And oh yeah, for your kind information there is one more campus under Bits Pilani in Dubai. And it is older than both Goa & Hyderabad campuses.
It doesn’t matter how many campuses you have, each campus is listed out in all of the renowned rankings of Educational Institutions where I don’t find the name BITS before I see IIT.
End of Story Bro, Hard luck
Dude you forgot to mention Arvind Kejriwal, Ashok Khemka, Raghuram Rajan, Chetan Bhagat, Manohar Parrikar. Give me one Bitsian of their league 😛
Prithviraj Chavan is one that comes to my mind first. There might be more I am not aware of!
Right bro @Munish nd this guy has mentioned Prithviraj Chavan as notable alumni of Bits Pilani.
Bits Pilani is still PROUD of Prithviraj Chavan. lolz :P:D
Dear Alankrit
First thing is I dont want to argue with anyone.
nd even i can give you a much longer list than this.
But the point is ask any common man about any of these and you will get your answer.
@Dheeraj
You are contradicting yourself. You asked ‘give me one BITSIAN of their league’ and there it is by Alankrit. Now suddenly you change your stance and bring up this ‘ask common man’ crap. Learn to stick to your words – don’t they teach this in IITs?
I hope you’ve heard of Deendayal Upadhayaya, the founder of BJP who was a BITSian and I hope you’d agree his contributions to the society were much more important than Chetan Bhagat’s. 😛
I also hope you’d have heard of Sabeer Bhatia, the founder of hotmail.
These were just a few to name. The list is too long.
Also take into account the fact that we had only one campus in India before 2004 compared to the 5 old IIT’s.
Comeon, you should have come up with a better example. Chetan Bhagat! I can’t believe you’re an IITan, seriously!

Love the Chetan Bhagat point, was about to write it myself.
I am very sorry @Alankrit
The server space of this bog is not enough to list out even 0.01% of Successful Alumni of IITs.
seriously you have too much time at BITS to list them out.!:P
Please be proud of your own achievements and boost about them if you have any.
@vinay that is true because atleast we’re not forced to go to classes at BITS so, yes we do have ample time to spend.
Ohh please stop pointing fingers and talk about them wasting engineering seats and government money and not even staying in their field. First check out how much government spends on each IITian and how these guys have wasted it. It is very easy to throw mud at others but please think about it before you speak.
Nice article. But being among the few who did part of my undergraduation in both institutes (one year in BITS Pilani, retried JEE and joined IIT Madras), I’m against a couple of your points. The extra-academic environment in IITM is as good as, if not better than BITS Pilani. There might not be grub nights, but IIT’s have hostel nights, and the campus festivals (Shaastra and Saarang) are much bigger and better (can be partly explained by location of Pilani). The bonding and socialising within the hostels are much better, and there are many more inter-hostel events in IIT’s which help enhance the extra-academic experience. Another point is your multiple-mention of Engineering graphics. It has been very long (at least 6 years) since AUTOCAD became an integral part of Engineering Drawings course in IITM. I actually thought the practical plus graphic way of teaching ED was better in IIT, though this course was very good in BITS too. Another point is sports infrastructure. IIT’s would beat BITS hands down here, as also in emphasis placed on extra-curricular activities in general. Again, in the comparisons you make old and new IIT’s would have to bucketed separately, as the new ones will take a few years to establish themselves, and any overall average of all (15?) IIT’s is unlikely to give the picture of what the old IIT’s are.
hey ppl….i am at iit d we use auto dest inventor a 44.5 lakh software for engineering graphics. u all use autocad that too the command promt vwrsion. u forgot to mention that Mr. Raghuram Rajan the governor of RBI is from iit delhi,
arvind kejriwal…dude u can never compare iits to bits…iits are way better. the only reason maybe iit will be a shade less is cuz we have reservation in our entrances….u can never even think if comparing bits to iit. give me one person i will give another from iit who is better in the same field…
You use a 44.5 Lakh software.. My God so that is how you waste so much government funds. And to update your knowledge, now AutoCad 14 is being used and its(obviously for someone who has brains) way cheap. Please check if a similar software is available for free to college students before purchasing it just because you have government money at your disposal.
By the way, it is Autodesk Inventor! not auto dest! 😛 i think u hav heard d software name only in some situation and have never used it! 😛
sorry it is a 4.45 lakh software
Ohh you are proud of 4.45 lakh software. BITS has a 250 crore lab which is only one of its kind in India for VLSI simulation. Suck that you stupid fuck. And also to remind you there is a saying. However high an IITian may get, there always will be a BITSian to sign his paycheck
MY SELF being iitian, i disagree at your point of using autocad, autocad has more than 75% of weightage in the drawing courses as per present curriculum.and also the hostel nights will show you the spirit of group working, one should not compare the capacity of colleges with highest package salary, but with the number of placements.
and scoring in bits exam is nothing but depend on your memory, formulae, and your accuracy with speed. But JEE is not that kind of exam it tests your application, your critical thinking, and also pshycological strength, please don’t compare between jee and bits exam.
MY SELF being a BITSIAN,I cleared JEE but opted for CS @ BITS. Also, almost all BITSIANs have cleared JEE as well.
SO, what do you mean when you compare JEE with BITSAT? AIEEE is similar to BITSAT, which according to you does not test your analytical skills and requires mugging up. IIIT-H took students through AIEEE and still does better than the IITs academically.
@RISHAB SHARMA , DUDE CLEARING JEE IS NOT A MATTER, BUT GETTING THE REQUIRED BRANCH AT THE DREAM COLLEGE IS AN ACHIEVEMENT , LET ME SAY ABOUT ‘IIIT-H PERFORMS BETTER THAN IIT’ I REQUEST YOU TO CHECK THE RANKINGS OF DIFFERENT COLLEGES GIVEN BY DIFFERENT WEBSITES FROM INDIA AND EVEN OTHER. THE INSTITUTES YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HAVE BEEN GIVEN A WORLD CLASS RANK.. FOR YOUR KIND INFORMATION
I GOT A ENOUGH SCORE IN BITSAT TO GET THE REQUIRED BRANCH AT PILANI BUT I PREFERED IIT :P. AND ALSO @AIEEE THAT IS WHY IT IS THE PRELIMS OF JEE :D.
REGARDING ONE POINT ABOUT ARTICLE… ‘OPEN BOOK EXAM’
AND ‘AUTO CAD’ GUYS PLEASE COME OUT OF THE BOX . THESE ARE COMMON IN THESE DAYS.. HOW DO U THINK IN IITS THESE ARE NOT PREVAILING AT ALL?.. HOW DO YOU THINK A WORLD CLASS RANKED COLLEGE DON’T HAVE THESE COMMON THINGS..:D COMMON AFTER ALL THESE ARE TAKEN FROM FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES…:P
please turn the caps lock off the next time its difficult to read,
i get a rank of 732 in jee adv with which i possibly land up with cse in iit roorkee and other 16 except the 5 but i choose to go to cse at bits pilani ,not just me but my four friends with all have rank near 1k choose to go to bits pilani and beleive me i am not regreting , its an awesome place . getting the required branch depends somewhat on your luck ,with a 300+ score in mains i was quite sure to make it to iit bombay or iit delhi but a bad day ruined all my hopes . the day when i take admsn in bits ,i was quite sad but just after 1 week there all my sadness disappears ,not bcos i was adapted but bcos i realise that its a good place and much better than my expectations . you can’t judge a place untill you are not there , my first year is just amazing and the 0 attendnc requirement enhance my skills a lot bcos i can do whatevel i like and still manage studies , and please turn off caps lock bcos you can’t get more attention with capital letters
Completely agree, I had AIR 1094 in Jee Adv and joined CS @ pilani campus, was worried initially, but in a week or so, realised that it was the best decision I ever took!
True. For appearing in BITSAT no separate training is required, any person got coaching for JEE can easily get through BITSAT. Students write this exam only for practice, if they wont get into IITs, then only they think of BITS.
The very fact of trying to prove that the BITSians are making of proving IITians lower is a mark of their shallow knowledge and useless ego of paying higher to a private institution. Instead you could have worked to establish institutions which praise your work could be a better alternative to prove yourself as more competent people. Come up with something better BITSians.
we bitsians dont think that we are better than iitians, just equals. Most of the students here have cleared JEE. Even if u get on our high horse and claim that IIT is better, u cant in ur right mind deny that we are not that far behind..coz if u do, then that’s just ‘coz of ur “shallow knowledge and useless ego”.
Totally apt. Brilliant title btw!!
im not a student of neither IIT nor BITS. i observe the comments on the both institutions. somebody told IITs are research oriented which is the one of the business of the government. BITS concentrates business.IITians are Executives.BITSians are business administratores.
Hi Sunil, I agree with your points, but after completion of engineering, parents want their students to get good jobs with good packages, its inherit a-lot of pressure and they compromise, it usually happens in middle class family!
what about people like arvind kejriwal, who did engineering and today are somewhere else? Then why did he do engineering?
What you are trying to say ?
An Engineer shouldnt serve his nation ?
Check your figures. IIT and BITS Pilani campus fees are comparable. Not sure about fees in Goa and Hyderabad. Dubai campus fees is high, of course.
Also, BITS went the Auto CAD way completely in 1998. No manual drawings.
You forgot to mentioned that the highest packages which has been offered to BITSian by Google.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/2-BITS-Pilani-students-bag-years-highest-Rs-1-44-cr-pay-package/articleshow/27231433.cms
I’m from Manipal. Yes, our college cannot be compared to the above colleges but it would be better if we stop the comparison/arguments. Such studies don’t matter.
People are CEOs because they worked hard for it and not because they studied at a great college.
As someone said above. It would be really fruitful if we could make a forum for all engineering graduates to interact and collaborate rather than futile arguments. IITians/BITSians can help/advice other college grads.
Hi,
if i have to choose between below courses which will be best for me
1. M.Sc.(Hons) in BITS pilani
2. Integrated Dual degree in IIT BHU (Physics or Mathematics and computing)
3. Integrated Dual degree in IIT Roorkee (Physics)
4. Electronics in ISM dhanbad
i can get into CSE in ISM dhanbad also
please need a quick response that will be really helpful
Prefer BITS. Study hard during 1st year n then the required engineering is yours 🙂
Compare IITs with BITS? its like comparing Steve Jobs/Bill Gates with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Arnold may be a famous hero and a powerful person(senator) but generations are proud of only a few elite class of people.
Save your energy in trying to make the reputation of BITS look as good as IIT’s
Dude you can note from the fact that nearly 15 iits and 3 bits campus
Still we are having such a debate
That itself shows the difference in the quality
too many iits, so too many seats, so easy to get in! bt fr bits there are only 3 campuses wich r accepting bitsat score! And a topper of my school who scored 340/360 in jee mains scored only 439/450! (actually not 450 bcoz he took those extra questions too, so it is 439/486)!
Dr Sanjay Radhakrishnan, Director at Boeing is also a BITSian. His name also may be included
i am still in class 12th. for me there’s no difference in iit or bits. there are many who have wasted engineering seats and gone to other field. a real engineer is one who gives his contribution to science and not to all silly comparisions. ok, a question for both iitians nd bitsian-name maximum people of ur institutes who have got noble.
Hi Sunil, I agree with your points, but after completion of engineering, parents want their students to get good jobs with good packages,, its inherit a-lot of pressure and they compromise, it usually happens in middle class family!
hi sunil! you’re partially right. i felt the same.. y take up engineering if you’re ending up in software or MBA. while job security is one reason, there is a vast difference between an MBA from engineering background and from that of a non-engg. background..
boring article. BITS Pilani is a private institute. Private institutes in India are useless & have high fees to study. There is a very big difference between the private institutes of America & India. America has world class research based institutes where mostly are private. Where as in India, Private institutes in India does not do any research at all & think only for placements.
“private institutes in India are useless”
do u think there would be so much of a debate if that is true? why, do u think you would have even commented on this if u think its useless?
i hate engineering
But you might love to see engineering battle ?
You should be shameful..! ‘Engineering Battle’. lame people, reservation kid.
i can do justice to this debate better than anyone else here because i have studied in both the institutes iit guwahati and bits pilani and i vote for bits its way more good in terms of college crowd(iit’s are filled with pathetic people) and students of pilani are as successful as any iit’s.SO GUYS PLS GO TO BITS PILANI IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE.
There are lots of other schools across the globe…So please stop with such pointless articles and arguments.
Kindly focus on being productive ! At the end of the day, what you do with your lives is all that matters! The school is just a 3 letters on your resume… THAT’S ALL!
The fact that you feel a NEED to put another school down to feel better about your school is a proof that
1. You are a loser
2. The other college is better !
I didn’t go to BITS or IIT… But I am getting a PhD in ECE at an Ivy league school in the US. I come from Champulal college of Engineering…and I know I will do something awesome with my life.
Good luck!
Success in life has very poor co relation with academics. There are so many entrepreneurs without degrees( college dropouts too) who are doing yeomen service. Secondly academic merit is temporary- meaning merit at 12 th std cant determine merit for life. These comparisons are useless and only serve to inflate egos. Over a period of time the very same people who were toppers in their 12 th std are humbled by life. Taking a broader view, one should aspire to get into the IITs/BIT but should not lose hope if they cant make it. In fact, people who miss the bus for IIT/BIT might study for more years and make more money. So really it does not matter, being positive matters.
well said. Losers need not be worried, good days are ahead to bounce back. All the best.
Lol.BITS vs IIT is still a hot topic.
Let me share my views in the most precise manner possible, rather than
a long diplomatic essay 🙂
Research : I dont think BITS Pilani
is of any match to the top 5 IITs (M,K,Kgp,B,D). Its mainly
because, IITs are heavily funded.
More money == more reaserch.
Co-curricular activites: I am quite sure none of the
IIT’s are of any match to the BITSIAN Enthu. Its mainly beause of the course
structure and the freedom which students get in the campus.
Zero Attendance- a main point to be mentioned. Students get an
option to explore their interest without any academic pressure.
Just to mention, I know some great musicians from IIT’s but
if you look the overall picture, students from BITS have a better
oppertunity.
Faculty : No doubt, IITs have a better faculty.( OLd IITs)
Placements : I am sick of this topic. Cant imagine how ppl
compare two institutes based on the placement package !! I think, our
institutions will produce better grads the day we stop thinking about
pay packages and start putting effort on something which you feel
can really make a difference in the society. Money will come automatically.
Hot chicks : IIT <<< BITS
Hot Guys : Dont know
MS/Ph.D. Conversion : Not sure of the numbers, but IITs might have
more number of Ms/Ph.D.s than Bitsians. As the article points out,
number of graduants in Bits is very less as compared to IITs.
My conclusion:
At the end of the day wht it matters the most is, do you want to excel in life
or do you wanna fuck it up !! In either case, IIT/BITS tag is useless, Its just the
matter of right attitude.
Just to mention, I am a BITSian as well as an IITian.
This is a fantastic article and I have not seen another one with this depth of analysis.. Kudos to you.
An irrelevant debate. All these colleges have “Technology/Science” in their names and things they are evaluated on : IIM entries , pay packages , corporate penetration !! WOW .
Amazing article, one could not hope for a more objective cross analysis of BITS Pilani and the IITs.
#BITSIt’sMagic
jobless BITS n IIT fighting here for pride and world dominance 🙂 🙂
Jobless BITS n IIT junta fighting here for pride and world dominance 🙂 🙂
The real good engineers from both these institutes… I am sure… don’t give a damn 😛
What’s with all this discussion IITians Vs Bitsians? After 4 years of graduation from these it ultimately comes down to you.
What one want to do in their life after studying from these Universities? This is the question most of them are thinking right now including me and my friends graduating from these Universities.
if you want to pursue Computer Science or get a job and just settle down, go for these Universities.
These Universities have the best culture and personality development.
But if you want to go for Civils, Armed forces or Higher Studies like Masters etc.,, it doesn’t matter where you are from and it upto you to decide.
Most of them who were from these Universities still wander around like should i go for CAT, GRE, Civils, or Armed Forces etc.,
So, there is one question every one has to face what to do after graduation like taking a Job and just let the life flow or achieve something big. Start working on this right now then you won’t face any problem in the future. The best way to know is to interact with the Seniors or the people who have graduated from the Universities.
most of friends after working for years went for Masters abroad in top US Universities while some cracked CAT and joined IIM’s.
One of my is in Air Force, he is it ultimately comes down to Job Satisfaction or one the you pursue with passion. Trust me this is the truth.
What’s the use if someone else from these Universities achieved high package or something Big and we actually debate on that. It finally comes down to you what you want to do with your life and don’t compare others
So, start building up plan from now and don’t just randomly follow others since they are from IITs or Bits, you should follow them and take up a course you aren’t interested.
You must have heard people not opting for IITs and going abroad to do what they are passionate like pursuing Physics etc., about. If you are passionate in something just go for it and don’t look back and it ultimately puts you in a high position and the only thing you need is patience.
The best advice you can get is from those people who have passed out from these Institutions and doing some Job for around 2-3 years. They will guide you much better than anyone else. Start building up for your from your High School after interacting with these people.
All the best
Everyone, stop this stupid argument. If you are getting iit go for iit, if you are getting bits go for bits, if you are getting both, go for the branch. My jee rank was 4k and bitsat score was 326.i chose bits because I was getting decent branches.its a personal decision. Don’t defame your college by insulting other ones.
I agree
Guys just dont fight.
ill be very happy if i get any of the two.
any suggestions?
Guys no one is better.
I’m a BITSian and have friends in IITs, I have seen that the curriculum is totally different, they can’t be compared at all.
It’s true that BITS is not the first choice but remember one thing that 50% of IITians are those shitty people who don’t deserve either colleges (the reservation people).
Though bitsat is easier than IIT-JEE but remember that in a competitive exam the level of paper doesn’t matter. Whether there paper is hard or easy the topper will still score the max marks (the max will vary though)
We right now are comparing only Btech. In higher degree everyone will agree that BITS can nowhere be compared from IITs but in case of UG courses, no IITian had the right to say that BITS bekar h
It’s rather funny reading the comments below, that Indians are fighting at this also!!!!, that getting into BITS is easy, IIT tough, etc etc. I really wonder, where the Indians are heading towards that even the admission criteria for a degree is also fought now.
IITs are useless, just speak english nothing else, all RATTA does not know any fundamentals of engineering. Not any worthwhile product/industry to their credit. All softwares are made by
foreigners. All engineering products designed by foreigners. They just work like cheap labour for their foreign masters.Any vehicle, machine, sea vessel, submarine, aircraft,…or anything developed by IIT/BITS Graduates?
You are all equally useless,a drain on poor nation’s tax payer’s money. You end up as glorified
clerks in foreign bank or some such services.Pathetic…why should india produce engineers who do not want to work as engineers??
And can they get any real indo-european, aryan, pakistani, or european girl as wife? They won’t be able to impress a sri lankan girl also, ha ha ha. At the best, they have to be content with their desi make up beauties. LOLs.
Yeah yeah, they work for their gora masters, come back, join politics, and do MERA BHARAT MAHAAAN sitting in air conditioned houses of their from new delhi, punjabi bagh etc.
Why shall other indians be their slaves first of all? Goans, mangaloreans etc are not Indians.
yes BITS means BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE….
Is it? Their BIRLA did little in past 100s years except doing slavery of GORA masters at KOLKATTA . Got a toy called ambassador from GORA and played with it for 60 odd years finally the toy was scrapped.TOYOTA started alongwith Hindustan Motors & is now at TOP OF THE WORLD.
This BITS contrary to it’s name never achieved a single point in Science or
Technology.Good APING of GORA for name sake.
ARYAN were capable of doing worthwhile things while rest of subhumans APED them and most cross breed INDIANS no exception
Desi breeds, the real indians. Did they fight any of their invaders, 8000 years back? Worshipped those people too. ha ha ha.
HA HA HA HA
Meekly submit to the invaders and adopt their way of life to survive.
In English there is a saying”If you can not beat them ,JOIN THEM”
And this is exactly what these DESI ones did in past.
birla actually was known to be slave of rothschild, a jew. Now you see, these people are crypto jew. Even tata is jew, that’s why looting india. And indians worship all their gora masters.
TATA is a parsi(FARSI) IRANIAN Refugee and not a JEW.
But yes foreign blood. When persia was run over by fanatic arabs and converted to pisslam, few survivors from them ran away to INDIA and settled in GUJARAT/MUMBAI.
TATA is one such ZOROSTHRIAN.
So my assumption proves true.Birla was slave of a JEW & so was M.K. GANDHI. He was lover of a german JEW and was gay to the core.
Faculty at these fuckin institutes is equally useless. The same MUGPOTS who mugged up earlier, vomit out their overdose in class room without knowing the practicle meaning of the stuff.Teach several fuckin theories whose use in industry is BIG ZERO.They should take retired people from good industries
as faculty and not the typical mugpots
Baniyas and Science? Baniyas are only good for doing works like cooks, grass cutters etc. Agrasen too tried to revolt but indra destroyed his revolution.
details please?
Indra did not allow rain to come to city of agroha, and it got destroyed, as he wanted to marry one of the baniya girl madhavi.
What is the actual fee of bits (pilani campus) can anyone tell in detail .?
