A comprehensive 2 year MA programme in society and culture was launched in Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar on Monday. IIT Gandhinagar became the first one to do so!
On 28th August 2014, the institute started its first batch comprising 13 students for the course, after receiving more than 400 applications from students across the country for the programme.
Eligibility: The applications were invited from students holding a bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
This course provides an inter-disciplinary attitude towards understanding and critically analysing society and culture. A few of of the thematic areas are identity and difference, local and transnational mobility, development and exclusion, India and its literature, population and health, etc.
The focus of the course is on South Asia, with special emphasis on India and Bangladesh which forms most of the curriculum. The course covers subjects like archaeology of ideas, South Asia- History, culture and society, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and musical traditions of India. A thesis at the end of two years is compulsory.
This 4- semester course will require a student a total of 80 credits to graduate.
Srinivas Reddy, the convener of the programme, said, “The course will give students a critical ability to approach the world and many challenges put forth by it. Careers after the MA programme could be related to journalism, communications, advertising or media, writing, human resources, teaching, non- profit (NGOs/ policy think-tanks) and of course higher studies in academia.”
