The Durgapur NIT is one of the first 8 Regional Engineering Colleges of the country, attaining the status of an Institute of National Importance in 2003. The campus is spread over 187 acres of land. It has a total intake of more than 1,000 students per year, and is a fully residential, co-educational campus. The NIT Durgapur campus has 7 hostels to accommodate students. It also houses a library containing more than 1.2 lac books. Being one of the premier institutes of India, it is governed by an autonomous Board of Governors.

The entrance examination to get seats in NIT Durgapur is based on the ranks of IIT JEE. Before appearing for the IIT JEE, students are required to confirm their class 12th board marks with the concerned board and authorities.
