This year in Goa around 114 engineering seats remain vacant after the completion of the first course of the admission. This is the higher number of vacant seats until now.The number of candidates waiting to get a seat in the second admission round has now reduce to nil from 400-500 every year. It is expected that the number of unfulfilled seats will rise further by 50-100 after the completion of the second round, as many candidates may prefer national institutes.
According to the official of the directorate of technical education the number of students approaching for admission in the national institutes has increased by a large extent. These institutes include Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and engineering institutes in various other states.
As per the statement of an official, there are sever factors. The number of candidates appearing for the GCET, Goa Common Entrance Test has also reduces a lot. Again, an official of directorate of technical education said that this is due to the modification in the age criteria for the entry to the 1st Class. Usually, the applications vary between 2,500 -2,600, but it was reduced by 300 this year. Generally, the seats available for engineering students become filled in the first round only, but it was not so this year. Hardly, there were any candidates waiting for the engineering seats.
The mining imbroglio in the state of Goa is also the major contributor to the low demand of engineering seats in this state. Student opting for the mining engineering course in the Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi has even reduced by around 50 percent. When the print media asked V. N. Shet regarding the placement scope for the students, he answered that in 2017, the first batch of the mining engineering candidates will pass out and then, people will get to know about the scenario of the placement stats.
A prime increase has been witness in the Engineering seats in Goa with the opening of the new colleges - Fatorda and Fr Agnel College of Engineering. Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda is highly popular for the educational benefits it offer the students.
Apart from the seats at the Shiroda across various streams, based Shree Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology as well as the mining engineering seats at GEC, all the engineering seats available in the various colleges were filled after the completion of the 1st round.
The electronics and telecommunications engineering and Mechanical engineering remained the popular stream among aspirants.
