A solenoid is not a solenoid if the length of the rod is shorter than the diameter of the rod.
In fact, a coil wound around a soft iron core is called as a solenoid only when its length is greater than its diameter. If not, actually the magnetic flux density is not evenly spread around the coil, which does not perfectly define the purpose of a solenoid.
