The proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) and distal convoluted tubule (DCT) are two segments of the nephron in the kidney involved in the process of urine formation (renal tubular reabsorption and secretion). They are differentiated based on their position within the nephron:

Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT):

Location: The PCT is located immediately after the glomerulus and Bowman's capsule in the renal cortex.
Function: It is primarily involved in the reabsorption of water, ions (such as sodium, potassium, and chloride), glucose, and amino acids from the filtrate back into the bloodstream. This reabsorption occurs actively and passively through various transport mechanisms in the PCT cells.
Structure: The PCT has a brush border of microvilli on its epithelial cells, which increases its surface area for reabsorption.
Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT):

Location: The DCT is located in the renal cortex, but it is further away from the glomerulus compared to the PCT. It comes after the loop of Henle and the macula densa.
Function: The DCT plays a crucial role in fine-tuning the reabsorption of ions and water depending on the body's needs and levels of various substances like sodium, calcium, and pH regulation. It also secretes ions like potassium and hydrogen ions into the tubule for excretion.
Structure: Unlike the PCT, the DCT has fewer microvilli on its epithelial cells and is less involved in reabsorption of nutrients like glucose and amino acids.
Summary:

Position: PCT is closer to the glomerulus, while DCT is further away from it.
Function: PCT primarily reabsorbs water, ions, glucose, and amino acids. DCT is involved in fine-tuning ion reabsorption and secretion.
Structure: PCT has a brush border with microvilli for efficient reabsorption, whereas DCT has fewer microvilli and is more specialized in ion transport.
These distinctions highlight how each segment of the nephron contributes uniquely to the overall function of the kidney in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
