Caryopsis and cypsela are both types of fruits that are commonly found in flowering plants.

Caryopsis: A caryopsis is a type of dry, one-seeded fruit where the seed coat is tightly fused with the fruit wall, also known as the pericarp. This type of fruit is characteristic of grasses (Poaceae family) such as wheat, rice, corn, and barley. When you eat a kernel of corn or a grain of wheat, you are consuming a caryopsis.
Cypsela: A cypsela is a dry, one-seeded fruit that develops from a compound ovary of a flower, with the seed attached to the ovary wall. It is characteristic of the Asteraceae family, which includes plants like dandelions, sunflowers, and daisies. The fluffy structure attached to dandelion seeds that aids in dispersal is actually the pappus, a modified calyx, which is part of the cypsela fruit.
So, to differentiate between the two, while both are dry, one-seeded fruits, caryopsis originates from monocotyledonous plants like grasses, whereas cypsela comes from dicotyledonous plants like members of the Asteraceae family.
