What is a complexing agent?

A complexing agent, also known as a chelating agent, is a chemical compound that forms stable complexes with metal ions by coordinating or binding to them. These agents have multiple sites or functional groups capable of forming coordinate bonds with metal ions, resulting in the formation of a complex.

The formation of a complex involves the coordination of the complexing agent's functional groups with the metal ion, typically through the donation of electron pairs from the lone pairs of electrons on the functional groups. This coordination results in the formation of a ring-like structure, known as a chelate, with the metal ion at its center.
