The normal boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which it boils when the surrounding pressure is at standard atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere or 101.3 kPa). For methane (CH4), the normal boiling point is approximately -161.5°C (-258.7°F).

If methane is at a temperature of -170°C, it will be below its normal boiling point. At this temperature and at atmospheric pressure, methane will be in the liquid state. If the temperature were raised above -161.5°C while maintaining the atmospheric pressure, methane would start to boil and turn into a gas. Conversely, if the temperature were lowered further, it would eventually solidify and become a solid.
