In ZnSO4 (zinc sulfate), the oxidation state of zinc (Zn) is +2. This is because sulfate (SO4) carries a -2 charge, and since the overall compound is neutral, the zinc ion must have a +2 charge to balance the charges.

When zinc reacts with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), it undergoes oxidation. Initially, zinc is in its elemental form with an oxidation state of 0. During the reaction, zinc loses two electrons to form Zn2+ ions, which have an oxidation state of +2. The sulfuric acid (H2SO4) accepts the electrons from zinc, reducing the sulfur in sulfuric acid from an oxidation state of +6 to +4. Hence, zinc is oxidized during the reaction.
