Cationic detergents are a type of surfactant where the active part of the molecule carries a positive charge (cation). These detergents are often used as fabric softeners, germicides, and in hair conditioners due to their ability to interact with the negatively charged surfaces of fabrics and skin. An example of a cationic detergent is cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Its chemical formula is (C16H33) N (CH3)3Br. CTAB is commonly used in various applications, including as an antiseptic and in the preparation of DNA extraction buffers.
