Iodine is a solid at room temperature and standard atmospheric pressure, and it is classified as a molecular solid. In its solid form, iodine consists of individual diatomic molecules (I2), where two iodine atoms are chemically bonded together. These molecules are held together by weak van der Waals forces, which are relatively weak compared to the covalent bonds within the I2 molecules. This gives iodine its characteristic purple-black color and a crystalline structure when it is in its solid state. When heated, iodine sublimes directly from a solid to a purple-colored vapor without melting, which is another unique property of this element.
