Take equal quantities of dilute hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide solution and distilled water in three test tubes. Use red litmus paper and blue litmus paper to find out the nature of the solutions. Also, add two or three drops of phenolphthalein solution to the three test tubes. Record the observation and find out the nature of the substances. Do you notice any colour change in distilled water? What property of water is revealed here?
