PARAMETER
SOLIDS
LIQUIDS
GASES
Packing of molecules
Closely packed
loosely packed
Very loosely packed
Intermolecular space
Very low
The rate of diffusion of liquids is higher because, in the liquid state particles move freely and have greater intermolecular space between each other more than those in solids
Gases have large intermolecular spaces. Due to high speed of particles and large intermolecular space between them, gases show the property of diffusing very fast into other gases. Example: The particles of the aroma of food mix with the particles of air spread from the kitchen, reach us.
Intermolecular force of attraction
Strong intermolecular force of attraction
Moderate force of attraction, less than that in solids
Negligible intermolecular force of attraction
Molecular movement
Possess only vibratory motion, but the mean position is fixed
Possess translator, vibratory and rotatory motion in one direction
Possess translator, vibratory and rotatory motion in all direction
Kinetic energy
Very low kinetic energy
High kinetic energy , more than that of solids
Due to the random movement and high kinetic energy in the gaseous state, the particles hit each other and also the walls of the container. The pressure exerted by the gas is because of the force exerted by gas particles per unit area on the walls of the container.
