Apical dominanceis the phenomenon whereby the main central stem of the plant is dominant over (i.e., grows more strongly than) other side stems; on abranchthe main stem of the branch is further dominant over its own side branchlets.
Plant physiologydescribes apical dominance as the control exerted by theterminal bud(andshoot apex) over the outgrowth of lateral buds. It can be overcome by the application of cytokinin as it plays a role in cell division.
