Metallic oxides are basic and non metallic oxides are acidic in nature. Take an example... Say Na be the metal, so its oxide is Na2O and on dissolving it in water we get NaOH which is definetly a base. Now take C (Carbon). Its oxide is CO2 and on dissolving it in water we get H2CO3 which is acidic in nature.
