How to find covalency and what are polar and non polar substances

The greater the electronegativity difference, the more ionic the bond is. Bonds that are partly ionic are called 
polar covalent bonds. Nonpolar covalent bonds, with equal sharing of the bond electrons, arise when the electronegativities of the two atoms are equal.
covalency can be calculated from the no of electron present in valence shell . 
it is equal to the no of electron required to complete the octect . 
for example carbon have covalency as 4 .
