Is N2 ‘s MO diagram explained via s-p mixing or via hybridisation?I am quite confused where to apply s-p mixing and where to apply hybridisation concept and why??Or I have to apply both ?? Please Explain

Dear student,

Hybridization is the concept of mixing of atomic orbitals with different energies, shapes, etc., into newhybrid orbitals which are suitable for pairing of electrons to formchemical bondsinvalence bond theory. Hybrid orbitals are very useful in the explanation ofmolecular geometryand atomic bonding properties.

MOT is a different concept. The atomic orbitals overlap to form new orbitals calledmolecular orbitals. When two atomic orbitals overlap or combine ,they lose their identity and form new orbitals. The new orbitals thus formed are calledmolecular orbitals.

I have attached self explainatory image for the same.

All the Best
