he Cassiterite is then mixed with approximately equal volumes of charcoal dust and a mixture of Sodium and Potassium carbonates (as a flux). The crucible used must have a lid to prevent atmospheric Oxygen from forming excessive Carbon dioxide.
During smelting, the flux helps to remove impurities from the metal being formed.
The overall reaction (upon heating) is:
SnO2 (s) + 2 C (s) --> Sn (l) + 2 CO (g)
Some write this as:
SnO2 (s) + C (s) --> Sn (l) + CO2 (g)
The liquid Tin is drained or poured into molds.
