Sir Plz explain me :- I use a trick to determine whether an atom or molecule is paramagnetic or diamagnetic by totalling the no of electrons in it ,,, if it is odd then it`s paramagnetic and if it is even then it`s diamagnetic but there`s an exception that if total electron is 10 and 16 then it is paramagnetic ( eg:- O2 is 16 electrons ,) so my doubt is how S2 is having 16 electrons??? Since it is paramagnetic!!!????

Hello Sohan !

First of all total electrons in one sulphur atom is 16. Therefore if you write S it means that there are two atoms of sulphur and therefore total electrons in S will be 32 [ i.e., 16 + 16 ]. Secondly it is absolutely true that S is paramagnetic in nature. The trick you use to find the magnetic nature is no doubt very easy and helpful . But its only a TRICK !!! It is not possible that it should hold true every time.

So, its a better advise not to use this trick always. If you have time then its better to solve these type of  questions by writing their configuration. Or the other way is you better memorise the exceptional cases in which this trick does not work !!!

I hope this answer will be helpful to you :-)

If you still face any problem please let me know !!!

Regards !
