The principle used in ammonia solvay process:
NH3+H2O+CO2---NH4HCO3
NH4HCO3+NACL---NaHCO3+NH4Cl
2NaHCO3---Na2CO3+COO2+H2O
The process consists of saturation of cold,concentrated solution of sodium chloride or brine solution with NH3.
When ammonical brine is dropped from the top of the carbonating tower and carbon dioxide is passed up to the tower from base, the following reaction occurs:
NaCL+NH3+H2O+CO2---NH4CL+NaHCO3
The carbon dioxide used above is obtained from heating of lime stone in lime kiln:
CaCO3---CaO+CO2
Quicklime obtained above is converted to slaked lime by dissolving in water:
CaO+H2O----Ca(OH)2
Then slaked lime is boiled with NH4Cl to liberate ammonia which is again recycled for further use :
Ca(OH)2+2NH4Cl----CaCl2+2NH3+H2O
moist ammonia obtained above is reused.
NaHCO3 is heated to obtain sodium carbonate:
NaHCO3----Na2CO3+H2O+CO2
the carbon dioxide obtained above is also reused ;
Na2CO3 is recrystallized by dissolving in water to get washing soda.
