A suction cup has a curved surface area which is supposed to adhere to a flat surface when pressed against it and left alone on the flat surface.
When the suction cup is pressed to any non-porous surface, the volume of the space cavity between the suction cup and the flat surface is reduced. Due to this, the fluid that is present in the cavity is expelled out. The suction cup tends to regain its original shape due to its elastic nature. As such, the cavity formed between the suction cup and the flat surface has left little fluid in it. This lacks pressure in it. Thus, the pressure inside the suction cup is less than the outside pressure which is atmospheric pressure. The difference in the pressure within the cavity and the atmospheric pressure makes the suction cup to adhere on the flat surface.
