Phenol on treating with conc.nitric acid yields 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.This compound is known as picric acid. But the yield was poor so nowdays Phenol is first treated with conc.H2SO4 which forms 2,4-disulphonic acid which is later on treating with conc.HNO3 gives 2,4,6-trinitrophenol i.e picric acid.
