the functional group which can bind more than two bonds or at least two bonds are called polyvalent functional group.
BIVALENT FUNCTIONAL GROUP – binding with two bonds as in oxygen 
TRICALENT FUNCTIONAL GROUP – binding with 3 bonds ans in nitrogen
