Water that does not formed lather with soaps is called the Hard Water.The hardness in water is due to the presence of appreciable amount of calcium and magnesium ions.Hardness is of two types-
1.Temporary hardness
2.Permanent hardness
Temporary hardness in water is caused by the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium ions.It can be removed by the addition of calculated amount of lime by which calcium/or magnesium carbonate is precipitated.
M(HCO3)2+ Ca(OH)2 -------------> MCO3 + CaCO3 + 2H2O
Lime
where, M = Mg,Ca
