Carbylamine test is the chemical test for the detection of primary amines both aliphatic as well as aromatic.In this reaction when primary amine is warmed with chloroform and alcoholic KOH,it gives isocyanides (carbylamines).Carbylamines has an offensive smell. This reaction is given only by primary amine and not the secondary or tertiary amines and hence used to distinguish primary amine from other classes of amines.The reaction is as follows-
RNH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH ----------> RNC(carbylamine) + 3KCl + 3H2O
