IIT-Indore commences courses with option to convert them into PhD

Indore: India’s one of the most acclaimed technical education centers, IIT–Indore has been experimenting in the courses offered and has also launched a new integrated programme which will be implemented from this academic session. This programme is a mix up of the B.Tech and the M.Tech courses and it has also an option to convert it into a PhD programme during the 9th semester.

According to the report released by the director’s office, IIT-Indore this information was the important highlights of that report. In the report dean, academic affairs, IIT-I, Prof Neelesh Jain has mentioned “In the mechanical engineering and electrical engineering disciplines a completely new five-year programme with BTech+MTech course structure could be commenced by this academic year 2014-15. This can encourage the research-oriented and academically brilliant IIT-I students to combine the PG programmes post third year of the BTech programme, and it also adds an option for them to convert it to the PhD programme while they are in their 9th semester.”

Along with this integrated program the institute is also going to launch four minor programmes in Humanities, BSBE, Social Sciences and Chemistry from the academic year 2014-15. Prof. Jain also said that this structure of courses have been brought in with the revision of the UG curriculum.

The revised program is also very much research oriented. This has also enabled the student of B.Tech to carry out their projects outside the institute for one semester. ‘The entire project of six to seven months of B.Tech can be carried outside the institute and the seventh semester is also freed from any type of coursework” as said by Prof. Jain. Since 2009, from the inception of the IIT-I, it has been delivering the industry oriented courses in the B.Tech structure and has been bringing several modifications in the course structures as well keeping the industry demand in mind.
