Young mathematicians will test their skills and knowledge in Cape Town next month at the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) from July 3 to 13 2014. Students from 100 countries will participate inthis “World Cup of Mathematics”.
The IMO is a problem-solving contest for high school students and is held in a different country in July every year. Romania hosted the first IMO in 1959 in which seven nations had participated. Today, more than 100 countries participate in the prestigious contest which represents over 90% of the world's population. The Olympiad is one of the oldest, biggest and most prestigious of all the international science Olympiads.The South African Mathematics Foundation is presenting the 2014 IMO which will take place at the University of Cape Town. The Department of Basic Education and the Department of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa are endorsing the remarkable event.
IMO 2014 is the first contest of its kind to be hosted by Africa which is regarded as a great honour for the country.
Team South Africa will be represented by eight participants: Nashlen Govindasamy, Yaseen Mowzer, Sanjiv Ranchod, Tae Jun Park, Robin Visser, Bronson Rudner, Melissa Kistner (deputy leader) and Dirk Basson (leader). Our best wishes to all the Maths wizards for the competition!
