About NCERT Class 8 Solutions for Maths Chapter 3 Understanding Quadrilaterals

The NCERT Class 8 Maths Solutions for Chapter 3 Understanding Quadrilaterals are based on different topics. You must first understand the topics discussed in the chapter before you start solving the NCERT exercises of the chapter:

  • A simple closed curve made up of only line segments is called a polygon.
  • Polygons can be classified based on the number of sides such as triangle has 3 sides, quadrilateral has 4 sides, heptagon has 7 sides, the rectangle has 4 sides and so on.
  • A diagonal is a line segment connecting two non-consecutive vertices of a polygon.
  • A convex polygon is a closed figure where all its interior angles are less than 180° and the vertices are pointing outwards.
  • A Concave polygon is a polygon that has at least one interior angle greater than 180°.
  • A regular polygon is one in which all angles are equal in measure and all sides have the same length.
  • Irregular polygons are the ones that do not have their sides equal in length and the angles are also unequal in measure.
  • Angle Sum Property: The sum of all the four angles of a quadrilateral is 360°.
  • The interior angles in a regular polygon are always equal to each other. Sum of interior angles = (n − 2) × 180° where 'n' = the number of sides of a polygon.

Different Types of Quadrilaterals and their Properties

Quadrilateral

Properties

A quadrilateral with each pair of opposite sides parallel.

  1. Opposite sides are equal.
  2. Opposite angles are equal.
  3. Diagonals bisect one another.

Rhombus:

A parallelogram with sides of equal length.

  1. All the properties of a parallelogram.
  2. Diagonals are perpendicular to each other.

Rectangle:

A parallelogram with a right angle.

  1. All the properties of a parallelogram.
  2. Each of the angles is a right angle.
  3. Diagonals are equal.

Square:

A rectangle with sides of equal length.

All the properties of a parallelogram, rhombus and a rectangle.

Kite:

A quadrilateral with exactly two pairs of equal consecutive sides

  1. The diagonals are perpendicular to one another.
  2. One of the diagonals bisects the other.
  3. In a kite ABCD, m∠B = m∠D but m∠A ≠ m∠C.
