About NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 4 Quadratic Equations Ex 4.2

The second exercise of the Quadratic Equations chapter is based on finding the roots of the quadratic equation using the factorisation method. There are 6 questions in this exercise in which some of which are word problems. You must read each question very carefully before you start solving it. Given below are some important points related to this exercise.

  • A real number α is called a root of the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, a ≠ 0 if aα2 + bα + c = 0.
  • We also say that x = α is a solution of the quadratic equation, or that α satisfies the quadratic equation.
  • Note that the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial ax2 + bx + c and the roots of the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 are the same.
  • To find the roots of the quadratic equation using the factorisation method you have to write the quadratic equation in product form/ factor form. Here’s an example for you:

Suppose you have to find the roots of a quadratic equation: 6x2 – x – 2 = 0. We will start by splitting the middle term of the quadratic equation.

6x2 – x – 2 = 0

6x2 + 3x - 4x – 2 = 0

3x(2x+1) -2 (2x +1) =0

(3x-2) (2x+1) = 0

Equating the two factors with 0, we get,

3x-2 =0

3x= 2

x=2/3

2x+1 =0

2x = -1

x = -1/2

So, the two roots of the given quadratic equation are 2/3 and -1/2. Can you verify whether this solution is right or not? All you have to do is place one root in place of x in the equation and see if it equals 0. Similarly, follow the same procedure for the other root. Ex 4.2 Q1: In the first question, you are given 5 quadratic equations. You have to find their roots by the factorisation method. This is a basic question that will help you understand how to apply the factorisation method in solving quadratic equations.

Ex 4.2 Q2: In this question, you have to solve the quadratic equations given in Example 1 of the chapter. The first example includes two different word problems. You have to read them carefully and formulate quadratic equations. Then, you have to find their roots. This could be a little tricky for some students on the first go. Our NCERT Solutions will help you master how to solve this question correctly.

Ex 4.2 Q3: In this question, you have to find two numbers whose sum is 27 and the product is 182. Do you know how to solve such questions? Don’t worry, our NCERT Solutions include stepwise explanations for this question.

Ex 4.4 Q4: In this question, you have to find two consecutive integers sum of whose squares is 365. You have to formulate a quadratic equation and find its roots in order to solve this question correctly.

Ex 4.4 Q5: In this question, you are given that the altitude of a right triangle is 7 cm less than its base. If the hypotenuse is 13 cm, you have to find the other two sides of the triangle. Check our NCERT Solutions for Ex 4.2 to understand how to solve this question correctly.

Ex 4.4 Q6: This is a word-problem type question. In this question, you are given that a cottage industry produces a certain number of pottery articles in a day. It was observed on a particular day that the cost of production of each article (in rupees) was 3 more than twice the number of articles produced on that day. If the total cost of production on that day was rupees 90, you have to find the number of articles produced and the cost of each article.
