As you are about to practise the NCERT Exercise 5.2, you must understand the basics of Arithmetic Progressions or AP.
Arithmetic Progression: An arithmetic progression or AP is a list of numbers in which each term is obtained by adding a fixed number to the preceding term except the first term.
It is given by: a1 , a2 , a3 , . . ., an or a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, . .
Common Difference: The fixed number that is added to each term of a list of numbers except the first term to form an AP is called the common difference of the AP. It can be positive, negative or zero.
It is given by: a2 – a1 = a3 – a2 = . . . = an – an – 1 = d, where d is the common difference.
The nth term of an AP: The nth term an of the AP with first term a and common difference d is given by an = a + (n – 1) d.
Exercise 5.2 of NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 5 is based on finding the nth term of an arithmetic progression. The exercise includes 20 questions of various types that will help you practise this concept in-depth. Let us see what kind of questions are included in this exercise:
Ex 5.2 Q1-Q3: The first-three questions of this exercise are very short-answer type questions or MCQs. In the first question, you have to fill in the blanks in the given table. In question two, you have to choose the correct option. In the third question, you have to complete the series. These kinds of questions seem easy but you can solve them correctly only if you have complete conceptual clarity.
Ex 5.2 Q4 and Q6: In these questions, you are given a term and you have to find whether that term is a term of the given AP. We have provided step by step solutions to such questions in our NCERT Class 10 Maths Solutions for Chapter 5 Ex 5.2.
Ex 5.2 Q5: In this question, you have to find the number of terms in the given finite arithmetic progressions. You can solve this question by applying the formula for the nth term of an AP.
Ex 5.2 Q7, Q8, Q9, Q16 and Q17: In these questions, you are given two or more nth terms of an AP and you have to find another term of that AP using this information. Learn how to solve such questions through our NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 5 Ex 5.2.
Ex 5.2 Q10: In this question, you have to find the common difference when you are given a relationship between two terms of an AP. It is again an interesting question to solve.
Ex 5.2 Q11: This is a different question. Here you are given an AP and you have to find which term of the AP is 132 more than its 54th term. You have to apply the same formula for finding the nth term of an AP in this question as well. See how to solve this question correctly in our NCERT Solutions.
Ex 5.2 Q12 and Q15: These questions are based on the comparison between two APs. Learn how to solve such questions correctly with the help of our free NCERT Solutions for this exercise.
Ex 5.2 Q13 and Q14: These questions are based on finding an AP using the given conditions. You have to find how many three-digit numbers are divisible by 7 and how many multiples of 4 lie between 10 and 250.
Ex 5.2 Q18 - Q20: The last three questions of this exercise are word problems where you have to read the given situation and formulae an AP accordingly. Many students find these questions tough to answer. Learn how to solve such questions using our free NCERT Class 10 Maths Solutions.
Chapter 5 Arithmetic Progressions Exercise 5.2 includes 20 questions.
