History

Bengal Eng. Science University LogoThe Bengal Engineering College, was established in 1856, and is the second oldest and one of the premier engineering institutions in India. The college, previously under Calcutta University, was given the status of an independent university since the year 1993. The university extends undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in 9 engineering disciplines and 4 non-engineering disciplines.
 

Campus

The University is spread in a beautiful green area covering nearly 49 hectares on the western bank of the river Hooghly. The institute building, accommodation for staff and students, campus amenities and services mainly occupies the University campus. The institution building consists of the main University building, most of the Academic Departments, the University Library, Department of Human Resource Management, and The University Administrative Office the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Office of the Dean of the Faculty and the Examination Office. There is also an eight storied Science & Technology buildings, a Workshop Complex and a Hydraulics Laboratory. The University is provided with uninterrupted power supply from the Calcutta Electric supply Corporation, water supply by the Howrah Municipal Corporation, in addition to which the University has its own captive generation plant and also water supply sources. Then the matter of security of the campus and maintenance of the compound is under an Estate Office under a Head Caretaker.

Hostel

The University, with a student population of about 2500 has 13 hostels, 12 for boys and 1 for girls. The University also provides accommodation for a sizeable numbers of faculty members and other categories of staff. Each hostel is under the supervision of a superintendent who is selected from the members of faculty. Hostel Messes are supervised by a committee ‘the Mess Committee’ who are elected.

Cultural Activities

There is a ‘National Cadet Corps (NCC)’, and a ‘Athletic Club’, which has in its offering facilities for almost all the outdoor and indoor games and sports. Then there is also the department of Students' Activities which encourages and enables the students to participate in various cultural activities.

Alumni:

BESU has one of the most active global alumni associations amongst the engineering schools of the country. Its global alumni association, also referred to as GAABESU (Global Alumni Association of BESU) has been the driver of alumni activities over the last 3-5 years, establishing a highly successful scholarship program and Mentorship program to aid financially needy students, and also to provide career counseling to senior students.
