NIT Nagaland is one of the 30 NITs located in the country, established in the year 2009 by the Government of India under the 11th five year plan to impart the technical education in Nagaland. NIT Silchar was the mentoring authority to NIT Nagaland. The initial batch of NIT Nagaland completed their four semesters at NIT Silchar and in September 2012 the batches shifted to the home state, Nagaland. The institute is a federal funded educational institution which is established under the Indian Parliament Act.

Located at the Old DC Complex near Chumukedima, the NIT Nagaland is one of the newly established NITs of the country. It is about 14kms from Dimapur. The institute is managed by NIT Nagaland Society and the institute is fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Previously the admissions were being done on the basis of AIEEE but later on it was changed to JEE Main. The institute offers three UG courses; Electrical & Electonics Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering.
