History

Vellore Institute of Technology LogoVellore Engineering College was founded by Mr. G. Viswanathan in 1984. 2001, saw the institute being was awarded the status of deemed university by the Human Resources Development Ministry, Government of India and then the name of the institute was changed from Vellore Engineering College to Vellore Institute of Technology. Then in September 2006, again it was renamed as VIT University as per a new decree issued by the ‘University Grants Commission’ enabling all deemed universities to change their name to 'university’. VIT University is one of the fastest emerging institutes and a center of excellence in Engineering and technical education offering at present 32 postgraduate and 18 undergraduate programmes separately from research programmes leading to M.S. (By Research), M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The courses are recognized by national agencies such as NAAC (UGC), NBA (AICTE) and Institution of Engineers (India).
 

Campus

The campus is spread over an area of 250 acres and is located on the Ranipet - Katpadi Road at Vellore, a district headquarters town between the two important cities of Chennai and Bangalore. Well furnished hostels are available in the campus together with the academic section. The strategic location of the institute adds value to the education in the sense that it helps create constant interaction with nearby industries.

Hostel

Separate hostels are available for both girls and boys. VIT have four types of hostels for boys- the Single Bedded, Double Bedded, Four Bedded, Six Bedded, all with the option of AC and non-AC. For the girls there are the option of TRIPLE BEDDED, FOUR BEDDED, SIX BEDDED hostels with again both AC and Non AC rooms. Apart from these the hostel provides reading materials and television, and STD phone booths, a washer-man services, a hair dressing service are also extra services available.

Cultural Activities

The students of VIT are provided with generous opportunities to nurture their creativity and develop wholesome personality. The students have the freedom to opt for any of the clubs from the extra-curricular activities clubs, to the skill development clubs and the societal development clubs. Dance Club ,Music Club, Movie Club, Dramatics Club, Debate Club, Trekking Club, Quiz Club, Health Club, Fine-arts Club, Creativity Club, E-Cell (Entrepreneurs Cell) Club, Literary Association (Tamil, English and Hindi) ,Toast Master International ,Energy and Environment Protection Club, National Service Scheme NSS ,Youth Red Cross YRC,are the clubs that the college has to offer. “Riviera”, is an annual International Sports and Cultural Festival, a much looked forward annual event conducted by VIT to facilitate and promote healthy competition, companionship and leadership skills.

Alumni:

The Alumni Association of VIT University (VITAA) has been under action from 1996 at the University campus with the main aim of the association being to maintain the link between the University and Alumni and share details of mutual growth, achievement and advancement in various fields.
