This River is also called Reva and known as ‘Life of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat” It’s mainly because of its huge contribution to Gujarat. Complete answer: Narmada is the longest river in Gujarat. It rises from the Amarkantak Plateau in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. It forms a very traditional boundary between North and South India by flowing westwards over a length of approx 1312km. It drains through the Gulf of Khambhat into the great Arabian Sea. It is one of the three major rivers in peninsular India running from east to west. The other two rivers are Tapti and Mahi. Narmada River doesn’t form any delta because of it being the rift valley river. Rift valley basically forms estuaries. Narmada is a Sanskrit word which means ‘the giver of pleasure’ and Britishers called it Nerbudda or Narbada. This river has a huge water resource potential and it has an annual flow of approx 33,210,000 acre feet. The valley is very famous for the gorgeous Maheshwari saris which are hand-woven. In Hinduism, Narmada is one of the seven holy rivers of India. It is believed that a dip in any of the holy rivers washes one’s sins away. India’s best hardwood forests and teak are found in the basin of Narmada River and these are much older than those in Himalayas. The lower Narmada River Valley consists of deciduous forests. Note: One of the most important national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Narmada valley are Kanha National Park. This Park has been described vividly in the famous ‘The Jungle Book’ by Rudyard Kipling.
