Calculate the number of photons emitted per secound by a 10W sodium vapour lamp. assume that 60% of the consumed energy is converted into light. Wavelength of sodium light = 590nm ?

Light energy emitted per second is E = 0.60 x 10 = 6 J/s.
Let n be the number of photons emitted per second. Then,
n x hc/l = E
This gives
n = 6 x 590 x 10-9/(3 x 108 x 6.63 x 10-34) = 1.78 x 1019/s.
