  • An Algebraic expression includes a constant, variable and some operations like addition, multiplication etc. For example, x+ y, 2x + 56, a3 + b2 - 6ab are algebraic expressions. 
  • An equation is a statement that has two expressions. 
  • A linear expression is an expression whose highest power of the variable is one only.
  • An equation of the form ax + b = c, where a, b and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0 is called a linear equation in one variable. For example, x+2=10, x=5, 2x+⅛=11 are some linear equations in one variable. 

There are different types of questions included in this exercise which include the following: 

  • In some questions, you are given the sum of two or more numbers and a relation between them. You have to find those numbers. For example, in Question 6, the sum of three consecutive numbers is 51 and you have to find those numbers. So, if you choose one number as x, the other two numbers will be, x+1 and x+2. 
  • This exercise also includes questions related to the age of people. For example, in Question 12, you are given that fifteen years from now Ravi’s age will be four times his present age and you have to find Ravi’s current age. 
  • Some questions of NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 2 Linear Equations in One Variable Ex 2.2 are based on rational numbers. For example, in Question 13, you are given that when you multiply a rational number by 5/2 and add ⅔ to the answer, you receive -7/12 and you have to find that rational number.
  • Another kind of question in this exercise is related to money. For example, in Question 16, you are given that the winner will get rupees 100 and a participant who does not win will receive rupees 25. You have to find the number of winners if the total prize money distributed is rupees 3000 and there are 63 participants.
